How a Hollywood studio musician became a Hawai'i 'ukulele legend.
Barney Kessel, who at the time was the West Coast A&R for Verve Records heard Lyle play and offered him a recording contract. The result of that was two jazz ukulele albums, "How About Uke" and "50th State Jazz". Unbeknownst to Lyle, these two albums became an integral and significant influence to many of Hawaii's most respected musicians today. (from Roy Sakuma Productions web site copyright 1997-2002 Roy Sakuma Productions, Inc.)
Lyle Ritz is known throughout the world as one of the original "masters" of the 'Ukulele. Also a professional bass player, Mr. Ritz has performed and recorded with the 'ukulele for over 40 years. His proficiency at 'ukulele jazz chords has gained him respect from all of the music industry. He presently performs and records with his Ko'olau Tenor 'Ukulele.
Here is an Apple Pro article by Nancy Eaton on Lylle Ritz and the recording of Lyle Ritz's No Frills CD.
Lyle Ritz: No Frills by Nancy Eaton
(excerpt) Between 2001 and 2005, Ritz tried, tested, rewound, and rejected a wide variety of home recording methods, including digital and tape recorders and a synthesizer with a built-in recording function. “It didn’t really work well,” he says. “It didn’t have the quality and precision I was looking for. So right after Jim told me about GarageBand, I went down to the Apple Store and had them show it to me.”
Despite humble protestations about his ostensible lack of computer savvy, Ritz neatly wrapped up all twelve tracks within an efficient six months of first cracking open the iBook box. Beloff released Ritz’s “No Frills” in 2006 under his fledgling Flea Market Music label, with graphic artist Liz Beloff designing the CD cover and all related marketing materials on the Mac. And Verve brought the story full-circle by remastering and releasing the CD version of 1957’s “How About Uke.”

(From artist's web site) Born and raised in Hawai'i and transplanted to the Washington, D.C., area to pursue careers, the Aloha Boys – Ramon Camarillo, Glen Hirabayashi, Isaac Ho’opi’i and Irv Queja - met in 1996 while playing music for their children and nieces at Halau O 'Aulani, a school of Hawai'ian culture, in the Washington, D.C., area.
A special and exciting bond grew musically among the Aloha Boys, who love to kanikapila or play an acoustic down-home, backyard-style Hawai'ian music – a style which includes everything from the very traditional to contemporary songs and styles. They all sing lead and backing vocals. Their voices blend in a nahenahe (soft pleasant) style. Guest artist Frank Della-Penna adds the Hawai'ian steel guitar in the classic old style. The music of the Aloha Boys brings them and their audience back to a lifestyle that is unique and precious to Hawai'i.

(from artist's site) - Originally from Hawaii, having been weaned on contemporary and traditional Hawaiian music, and later drawn to acoustic and slide blues guitar, Jason brings the “island blues” to Southern California. These eclectic musical influences are echoed in the way he plays his “electric ukulele" to produce his signature “island blues” sound -- the flavor of Hawaii with the soul of the blues. Showcasing the versatility of the ukulele as a lead instrument across a variety of musical styles, Jason has guest performed with alternative rocker Donovan Lyman and his band, Blue Meridian, the R & B acoustic soul songstress Lady L, singer-songwriter Deron Wade, and cello rockers, the Ken Oak Band. Influenced by the music and culture of Hawaii and acoustic and electric blues guitar, Jason rocks out on his "electric ukulele."

“The Bag End Boys write contemporary pop songs that feature melodies that sometimes swirl in neat, unexpected ways. They can also cut a fine cover version of the Beatles classic, "The Word." Most amazing is how two ukes and two voices can sound so full. Further proof that the ukulele can rock and pop like its six string relative.” - Jim Beloff, Flea Market Music
“Aussie Azo Bell is one of the best uke players of the new-uke generation. Along with band mates Billy Milroy on single string bass and Tim Reeves on snare drum, Azo shows off some amazing single note picking and strumming that are one part vaudeville, and one part modern jazz. Includes many standards Rag Mop, Foggy Day In London Town, Misty, and a slew of originals including the instant uke classic Spider Walk. Serious chops mixed with a wicked sense of humor.” - - Jim Beloff (Review of 'Lost In Spice' CD), Flea Market Music, California.
(From fleamarketmusic.com) Jim Beloff is the author of The Ukulele-A Visual History (Backbeat Books) and author, compiler and publisher of the popular Jumpin' Jim's series of ukulele songbooks.
This series has sold well over 150,000 copies and is distributed by the Hal Leonard Corp. Jim has also recorded two CDs of original songs performed on the ukulele (Jim's Dog Has Fleas and For The Love Of Uke), produced Legends Of Ukulele, a CD compilation for Rhino Records, and made two how-to-play DVDs for Homespun Tapes entitled The Joy Of Uke #1 and #2. Most recently he released The Finer Things, a recording of sixteen songs he collaborated on with ukulele master, Herb Ohta. In 1999 Jim and his family introduced a new, colorful and low-cost ukulele called the FLUKE (and in 2003 the smaller FLEA uke) that have won admirers all over the world. In six years over 20,000 FLUKE and FLEA ukuleles have been sold. In November 1999 he premiered his Uke Can't Be Serious concerto for ukulele and symphony orchestra. It was commissioned and performed with the Wallingford (Connecticut) Symphony. In 2002 Jim and his wife, Liz, were lead consultants on Ukulele Fever at the Stamford (CT.) Museum. This exhibit was the first museum show to explore the full history of the ukulele. Their Los Angeles-based company, Flea Market Music, is dedicated to the ukulele and they believe very strongly that "Uke Can Change The World." They list among their influences Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, the Boswell Sisters, Sol Hoopii, King Bennie Nawahi, Annette Hanshaw, Al Bowlly, George and Ira Gershwin, and many more illustrious entertainers from the golden age of popular music, when tunes on the radio held appeal for every member of the listening audience.
They have performed weekly in the New York City area as well as at many private and corporate parties and weddings, in addition playing two jazz cruises on the Queen Elizabeth II, in 2001 and 2002. Their romantic lyrics and lyrical musicianship make them a favorite of lovers and jazz fans wherever they perform.

After playing the guitar for over 40 years, Craig discovered the ukulele, and has not looked back. Although he enjoys nearly all styles of music, his true passion is creating chord melody arrangements and finds the ukulele to be a perfect fit. Craig's ukulele idols include Herb Ohta-San, Benny Chong, and Lyle Ritz. However, his single greatest influence is the legendary guitar player and arranger, Howard Heitmeyer. Craig had the good fortune to begin studying with Howard in 1991 and is still working with him on ukulele arrangements today. Howard makes a rare appearance on this CD, playing, “Craig’s Waltz” with his trusty Kono classical guitar.

(From artist's web site) Living in the D.C. area since 1996, Ramon came from Hawai’i, bringing his ukulele and his dynamic wheel-throwing style. In Hawai’i, he had been refining his skills in the art of raku, exhibiting, and winning awards for nearly 20 years. Once on the mainland, he started gaining national recognition in the clay industry. When he's not working out of the prestigious Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, or Lee Arts Center in Falls Church, Ramon is based out of his home studio/gallery in Vienna (all in Northern Virginia).
Ben Chong taught himself to play the 'ukulele when he was about 11 years old. After nine years or so, he virtually put the 'ukulele away for some thirty-five years. When I met him in 1964, he was the guitarist with the Ali'is, the band that backed up Don Ho. In 2000, I invited him to be one of the four artists in "The Art of Solo 'Ukulele", a concert series that led to a CD and a public TV special. These events revitalized his interest in the 'ukulele, resulting in his album.
Ben Chong plays a baritone size, cutaway Ko'olau 'Ukulele. He has performed in Hawaii and throughout the world with the Don Ho Band for many years, becoming one the classic 'ukulele players of our day.

As a youngster, Takeo Kudo learned to strum basic chords on the ‘ukulele. It was the first instrument he learned to play, but by fifth grade he’d lost interest. He stuck with music, earning degrees in theory, ethnomusicology and composition, and joined Manoa’s music faculty as a professor of theory and composition. Then, about five years ago, he picked up the ‘ukulele again.

He formed one of the city’s first blues bands, playing a primitive Hubert Sumlin-style lead, and slide guitar in a Muddy Waters/Elmore James vein.

(except from The Canadian Encyclopedia ) During Doane's tenure as supervisor of music for the Halifax School Board (1967-84), he changed school music programs dramatically, using the ukulele as an inexpensive and practical teaching instrument for children and adults. His unconventional approach, vindicated by the success of Halifax school bands and orchestras in concerts and competitions across Canada, has produced a model of public music education worthy of study by educational jurisdictions elsewhere. In 1984 Doane became associate professor at Nova Scotia Teachers College. He is much in demand as a consultant and leader of workshops across Canada and in the USA.
(from Chalmers Doane web site )
Commitment to education, dedication, long-term outstanding leadership as a cultural educator, excellence in skills in the education of both individuals and groups, in the performing art of music, innovation and creativity are truly characteristics of J. Chalmers Doane.
Once called "The Pied Piper of Halifax", Nova Scotia native Chalmers Doane opened the doors to the magic of music for hundreds of children. From 1967 to 1985, Chalmers emerged as an imaginative and dynamic supervisor of music in the Halifax school system, introducing one of the largest string programs in the country, consistent instrumental classes taught by specialists, and award winning stage bands.
As Director of Music Education for the then City of Halifax, he organized and implemented the province's first school instrumental program. Consistently, he has exercised a positive approach - a therapeutic method which fills the participants with the joy of music. Inspired by the belief that music is for everyone, he has dedicated many years to helping people of all ages who would like to play a wide range of instruments.
Not happy to be only an administrator, he taught many classes daily during his seventeen years in Halifax. Chalmers said that he would like to see Halifax become known as a musical city. To that end, bi-weekly music classe were introduced in every elementary school, starting at the primary level. The goal was to produce musically literate students by the end of Grade 6. Instrumental and choral experiences were additional opportunities for those with keen interest.
The benefits of that program can be heard every day in Halifax, and in cities around the world - from the many performers who do their hometown proud, to the audiences who cheer them on.

A GREAT collection of ukulele TABS from "Dominator" aka Dominic Pieranunzio are available.
(from Dominator's site ) A little about me: Primarily a self taught guitarist, pursuing the ukulele for approximately six years, I have spent the last couple of years concentrating on the ukulele. Not being able to find tablature for the ukulele in the same quality and format as was (and still is) available for the guitar is the motivation behind this site. Since books containing ukulele tab were not available, I decided I would try to transcribe the songs myself and make them available for others to learn from as well.
Being self-taught, I know very little about music theory. I know enough about the Modes that I can improvise and construct solos, for guitar, without any major issues. I find tablature much more suitable for me than learning to read notes on the musical staff. Therefore, the tabs presented on this site may have errors regarding correct key signatures, time signatures and notes that may be written in the wrong octave etc. I am sorry if this is an inconvenience for those who choose to read the musical staff and prefer not to use the tablature staff when learning a particular song. If I could, I would eliminate the music staff all together but my transcribing software does not currently support that function. This is why I always recommend listening to the original recording, or in some cases my recorded mp3, to get the timing and feel for the song. By doing so and placing your fingers on the fret board as indicated in the TAB you will be well on your way to playing the songs listed on this site. As always, I will do the best I can to answer any questions you may have. So, choose your favorite songs and strum, strum away. Dominator!

(from WidipediA) George Formby's trademark was playing the banjolele in a highly syncopated style, collectively referred to as the 'Formby style'.
Among the several styles that he used, the most commonly emulated stroke of Formby's is a simple but clever technique, called the "Split Stroke", a technique which could produce some distinctive (but relatively easy to copy) effects. He sang in his own Lancashire accent.
Other strokes used by Formby include the triple, the circle, the fan, and the shake.

(from artist's site) - Kristopher Fuchigami was born on June 5, 1990. He was anxious to enter this world as his parents barely made it to the Hilo Hospital in time for his arrival. He has lived in the Keaau area all his life and has attended Keaau Elementary, Middle, and High School.
When Kris was 13 years old, his mom and siblings went to visit her family in Japan for the summer and Kris was stuck at home with his dad and very bored. He found a busted up old Walmart ukulele in his older brother's stuff and started playing with it. He remembered his middle school music teacher mentioning something about an ukulele player named Jake Shimabukuro during the previous school year.
(From Taimane's Profile) At just five years of age, Taimane was given ukulele and fell in love with the instrument. At six years of age, she was called a child prodigy and won her first ukulele competition competing against boys double her age. Taimane has won numerous ukulele competitions competing against experienced adult professionals.
At fourteen years of age, Taimane was offered by Hawaiian living legend Don Ho to perform in his show. She has been a featured performer in Las Vegas, Palm Springs, New York, and New Jersey. Taimane released her debute album "Loco Princess" in Japan in 2005 for BMG Japan and toured all over Japan successfully.

(from artist's site) Mark "Spanky" Gutierrez was given a ‘ukulele by a friend that owns a local second hand guitar store in the spring of 2002. He had no idea how it would impact his life. It was a no name baritone and the intonation was way off beyond the fifth fret but he couldn’t put it down. Mark kept searching for a tune he couldn’t play on the little instrument but there always seemed to be a way to work it out.
He was introduced to the world of ‘ukulele through Jump n Jim’s web site which led him to the 2002 festival in New Jersey. He played a few tunes with Rick Russo during the open mic – an event that changed his life. Since then he has attended 6 festivals, been to Hawaii twice and his ‘ukulele collection has greatly expanded. Several people in the ‘ukulele community have influenced the way Mark plays as well as his outlook on life. He hopes to return the favor.

“[Hill's] technique is a seamless blend of speed, accuracy and expressiveness... A glimpse into the future of the ukulele.” - Jim Beloff, Author of The Ukulele: A Visual History
(Short Bio from the James Hill Press Kit)
Ever heard of the `ukulele? Sure you have - it's that funny little four-stringed Hawaiian guitar that goes “plunk-a-plunk,” right? Wrong. The `ukulele (pronounced oo-koo-lay-lay) is hotter than ever, embraced worldwide by a crop of young musicians eager to push the instrument into uncharted territory. Leading the charge is Canada's James Hill, “the Wayne Gretzky of the `ukulele” according to Stuart McLean, host of CBC Radio’s Vinyl Cafe.
With the release of his third solo album, A Flying Leap, this “imaginative and versatile” 26-year-old virtuoso continues to “tear up the uke” (AcousticGuitar.net). Seven of the album’s ten tracks are genre-bending originals ranging in style from the bluegrass-tinged 'Song for Cheri' to the jazzy 'Fleas My Dog Has' to the remarkable 'One Small Suite for `Ukulele,' an ambitious work in three movements written for `ukulele and string quartet. Displaying a “keen interest in pushing the envelope,” James' “broad musical horizons and crisp, clean playing” prove that “he can play just about anything in any genre” (John Berger, Honolulu Star-Bulletin). A Flying Leap is one part Earl Scruggs, one part Django Reinhardt garnished with a pinch of Don Ho and served with a side of Hendrix.
So how does a kid from Canada become what the Honolulu Star-Bulletin calls a “rare peer” of Hawaii’s premier `ukulelists? Nearly three thousand miles east of Honolulu is James' hometown of Langley, British Columbia, where `ukulele instruction has been mandatory in many schools since the late 1970s and where James was introduced to the `ukulele at the age of nine. To his fourth grade classmates, the `ukulele was a means to an end, a way for them to dip their toes into the vast ocean of music. For James, the uke was a sea of possibilities unto itself and inside its tiny wooden shell he saw his life in music. He was hooked. During his teenage years he honed his skills as a key member of the renowned Langley Ukulele Ensemble under the direction of Peter Luongo. Luongo, an `ukulele educator for over 25 years calls James “unquestionably Canada's finest `ukulele player.”
After touring for twelve years with the Langley Ukulele Ensemble, James embarked on a solo career in 2002 with the release of Playing it like it isn't..., a “beautiful, humorous and virtuosic” debut that saw him “reaching a whole new level” (David Kidney, Green Man Review). His sophomore release, On the Other Hand, would follow in 2003, confirming his place as “one of the world’s top composers for the instrument” (Rafe Mair, 600AM Vancouver).
"He's got it all!" says Grammy-winning Hawaiian recording artist Daniel Ho, referring to James' "pristine technique" and "inspired" compositions. In performance, James is energetic and captivating, mixing colourful anecdotes with a versatile repertoire that stretches from Schubert to the Beatles and beyond. He is heard frequently on CBC and NPR National radio, has made TV appearances on The Tony Danza Show, MTV Select, Urban Rush and Studio 4 with Fanny Keifer, and has shared billing with the world's foremost `ukulele players including Herb Ohta (Ohta-San), John King, Lyle Ritz and Benny Chong.
The `ukulele has long been an international affair. An instrument of Hawaiian fame and Portuguese ancestry with a strong following in Japan, Europe and the United States, it’s somehow fitting that the uke should find a champion in a young man from Canada. Jim Beloff, author of The Ukulele: A Visual History, calls James’ work “a glimpse into the future of the `ukulele” - take a listen and you’ll understand why. It’s `ukulele... seriously.
“Honestly, this is the freshest most exciting playing that I've heard since Troy Fernandez.” - Derek Shimizu, GString Ukulele Co
“I remember the first time I heard Jimi Hendrix... He did things with an electric guitar that I hadn't imagined, hadn't thought possible. James Hill does that with the ukulele.” - David Kidney, The Green Man Review

(From Daniel's Bio) February 8th, 2006 marked a career milestone for Daniel Ho. He was awarded the music industry's top honor--a Grammy for his work as a producer and artist on the album "Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, vol. 1 (Daniel Ho Creations)."
Daniel was born and raised in Kaimuki, on the island of Oahu. He discovered his fascination with music at the age of three when his mother taught him Mary Had a Little Lamb on a toy piano. Throughout grade school and intermediate school, Daniel studied the organ, 'ukulele, classical guitar, piano, electric guitar, bass, drums, and voice. As a high school senior, he flew to Michigan to compete in the Young Keyboard Artists Association International Piano Competition before heading off to the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, California. He remembered the experience well, "It was like David and Goliath – and I didn't have a slingshot."
At the Grove School of Music, Daniel studied composing, arranging, and film scoring. He began his professional career in 1990 as the leader, keyboardist, producer and composer for the contemporary jazz group, Kilauea. By 1997, they had released six best-selling smooth jazz albums to rave reviews. Two records reached Billboard's top ten, two hit number one on Radio & Record's national airplay charts and all but one placed in the top five.
Daniel has since recorded 18 CDs as a solo artist. Isolating Daniel's musical genre can be quite difficult as he continues to tap into the many facets of his talented background. His portfolio includes smooth jazz, slack key, religious, acoustic alternative, classic and contemporary Hawaiian. He has performed throughout the continental U.S., Tasmania, Australia, Mexico, Japan and Germany as a soloist and tours with Grammy Award winning vocalist, Peabo Bryson, as a keyboardist and guitarist. He was a guest lecturer at Stanford University, and a featured soloist with the Honolulu Symphony. He is a studio musician for the NBC soap opera, Passions, playing piano, electric guitar, acoustic guitars, and bass. In addition to a Grammy, this multi-instrumentalist/composer has received numerous industry honors, including three coveted Na Hoku Hanohano awards.

(From Howlin' Hobbit's Bio) Howlin' Hobbit plays old jazz and original tunes on ukulele and other instruments with verve, skill, laughs and fun!
Howlin' Hobbit has been playing music and singing since grade school. That was somewhere back in the dark ages.
Howlin' plays a variety of instruments, but his main "axes" are guitar, harmonica, drums and, lately, a lot of ukulele (too much fun in a tiny package).
For many years Howlin' was a busker at the Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington, playing mainly blues on guitar and harmonica. In the summer of 2001 he played washboard with Patsy Fuller, another busker (from the U.K.), and was featured in that capacity (as well as vocals and harmonica) on her CD 'Twixt Pike & Pine.

(From Kimo's site) - For years my mother has consistently told me I started to play the ukulele when I was 5 years young. Ukulele were so common in Hawaii I assume I initially took it to be a toy. From my initial exposure up to today, including ALL practice sessions, it’s always been FUN to play.
In junior high school, I remember music had started to become a serious interest and I got involved in band, glee clubs and organizing musical combos. This continued through high school and college, eventually resulting in a Bachelor of Arts degree in music (choral conducting). This degree plus my relevant experience in music has taught me there is no substitute for organized, effective practice. Combining this with my love of ukulele brought fun to those many practice sessions, so I continue today . . . . having the knowledge, experience and confidence to know how to impart knowledge relevant to technique, practice and having fun.
The threat of being drafted put a crimp in my budding musical career so I joined the Air Force, decided I loved it and turned aviation into an alternate career. But what I did had such a significant, relevant impact to my musical development. Flying airplanes requires a very disciplined training and operational approach. Added to decades of experience as a trainer, this provided me an outstanding facility for teaching music.
After retirement from the Air National Guard, I recorded a ukulele CD (Eminent Ukulele) and shared publication of a Hawaiian songbook (He Mele Aloha) as one of four authors. I’ve also shared inception of a non-profit organization, Pacific Music Foundation, whose mission statement is to facilitate music that SOOTHES. I’m concurrently involved in recording two more CDs, one vocal ensemble and the other instrumental ----- of course, ukulele.
Years of musical experiences teaching and playing throughout the world have consistently shown me what I most enjoy about music and ukulele is being a part of music’s creative process. That’s the fun part and I have a notion that is the fun part for you as well. The process massages the soul. I am familiar with using the ukulele and other musical outlets to facilitate this process for you and am anxious to share.

(Short Bio from the KoAloha web site) - In Japan, there is a name synonymous with ukulele. That name is simply known as "Iwao." Iwao had a very successful career as a guitar player, producing many albums with that first instrument. He attended a performance by Ohta-san and a new love for the ukulele grew rapidly in his heart. He now focuses his efforts into his awesome ukulele playing. There is no bigger ukulele star in Japan than Iwao.
This is the song that Iz is most famous for. Just as John Coltrane took a corny song "My Favorite Things" and firmly placed it in the jazz repertoire Iz's rendition has done the same for this song.
(from WidipediA:) Israel "Bruddah Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole (May 20, 1959 – June 26, 1997) lived in Hawai'i until his death at the age of 38. (From www.ledkaapana.com)) - Led Kaapana is nearing his 40th year as a professional musician. His mastery of stringed instruments, particularly slack key guitar, and extraordinary baritone and leo ki`eki`e (falsetto) voice have made him a musical legend. His easy-going style and kolohe (rascal) charm have made him a favorite of audiences from Brussels to his birthplace on the Big Island of Hawaii. Recognition by his peers earned Led Grammy nominations in 2006 and 2007.
Like so many Hawaiians, Led grew up in a musical family. In the tiny black sand bay village of Kalapana, there were few distractions. "We didn't have electricity, not television, not even much radio," says Led. "So we entertained ourselves. You could go to any house and everybody was playing music."
Often everybody was playing music at a backyard party, many of which lasted for days. "People played in shifts, taking over when somebody went to sleep," Led recalls. "You'd fall asleep to the music, wake up....and the music was still playing. That was the best alarm clock I ever had!"
It was at these family gatherings that Led learned to play in the old style, watching, listening, then imitating. Chief among his teachers were his mother, Mama Tina Kaapana, and his uncle Fred Punahoa. "Even today when I play, I still picture all the `ohana (family) getting together and sharing their songs and their aloha."
Although isolated, outside influences did creep into Kalapana. Like most kids his age, Led loved to rock and roll and also listened to country, jazz, and Latin music. When he'd sneak a riff from a guitar hit of the day, like Pipeline or Walk Don't Run, into his music his dad would tease, "Hey, that's not slack key!" But nobody ever stopped him, they just encouraged him to "play what you feel and play with aloha."
As teenagers, Led and his twin brother Ned and cousin Dennis Pavao formed the Hui `Ohana, one of the hottest groups of the 70s and 80s and now legendary among Hawaiian musicians. The 70s saw the blossoming of the Hawaiian Renaissance, and Hui `Ohana was a key part of that return to traditional Hawaiian culture and music. Young Hawaii Sings Old Hawaii, the title of their first recording, was also their statement of purpose.v
The group produced 14 best-selling albums and made countless hundreds of live appearances, proudly sharing Kalapana's musical traditions.
Led later formed another trio, I Kona, releasing 6 albums with that group, including Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner, Jus' Press. He has also released a number of solo albums, including two Na Hoku Hanohano Instrumental Album of the Year winners, Lima Wela and Black Sand. Ki Ho`alu, Hawaiian Slack Key and Grandmaster Slack Key both received Grammy nominations.
While recording for Dancing Cat Records, Led has produced a number of solo projects, duets, and a project with Allison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, and other bluegrass legends called Waltz of the Wind. He has worked with Dolly Parton, Chet Atkins, and many other Nashville notables. Back at home, he has shared his talents on recordings with most of Hawaii's top talents, including Aunty Genoa Keawe, Barney Isaacs, The Ho`opi`i Brothers, Melveen Leed, the Pahinui Brothers, Amy Hanaiali`i, and countless others.
Led tours the US extensively and has also appeared in Belgium, Germany, Canada, Japan, and Tahiti.
When home in Hawaii, he performs regularly at the Mai Tai Bar at the Royal Hawaiian on Saturday afternoons. Sunday evenings it's Kona Brewing Company in Hawaii Kai where local talent and visiting musicians from the four corners of the globe drop in to join the "back yard" party.

(from artist's site ) Dana "Moon" Kahele of Pure Hawaiian ancestry was born in Hawaii the second youngest of nine children from the late John & Lucille Kahele. At an early age, family were strong music influences exposing him to various instruments, singing in Choirs or having fun "jamming" at family luaus. His Dad had a large music collection of island and mainland artists that fueled his music desires. As a child, the Hawaiian Slack Key guitar was introduced to him by Jonah Kipi. Moon performs at the Annual Master of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festivals in Hawaii. The Ukulele, introduced by his Mom, was reinforced by Kumu-Ukulele Virtuoso, Herb Ohta San.
During a successful Law Enforcement career, his travels exposed him to various music influences. Country, Jazz, R&B, Blues, Pop Rock and Latino sounds add variety into his repertoire. He performs at Corporate Events, Weddings, Anniversaries, Music Concerts/Festivals or Private luau's from the Florida coastline to the sandy shores of Hawaii. He is recognized as a talented songwriter-composer. The Kahele Ohana presently resides in Phoenix, AZ but are planning a permanent return to Hawaii in 2008.

(from Ukulele PUAPUA) Jody Kamisato was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1977, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Music has been an integral part of Jody's upbringing.
At just seven years of age, Jody was given his first ukulele lesson by his music teacher in elementary school. At the age of eight, Jody began performing with the world famous Honolulu Boy Choir. During the next five years he had the opportunity to travel all over the United States, record on an album, and sing on several national T.V. shows as well as commercials.
After graduating from Kaiser High School in 1995, his interest in ukulele began to grow. Through the next eight years, Jody has studied under ukulele masters such as Jake Shimabukuro, Troy Fernandez, Peter Moon, and Roy Sakuma.
In 2000, Jody joined "Ukulele Academy" owned by Jake Shimabukuro and started his career as an instructor.
While the academy was supported by the young who admired Jake's innovative style, Jody invented his own style and became one of the most popular instructors.
After graduating from the University of Hawaii with a degree in Music Marketing, Jody began teaching at Ukulele Essence along with his partner Bruce Shimabukuro.
Together along with Gary Akiona, they make up the "Bruce Shimabukuro Band". The "Bruce Shimabukuro Band" continues to share the aloha spirit through their music. They have successful live performances in Hawaii and tour Japan three to four times a year to do live performances and ukulele workshops.
In 2004, the "Bruce Shimabukuro Band" was invited to Japan to perform in the largest ukulele event called the Ukulele Picnic. In 2005, the band was invited to perform as the final act for the Okinawan Festival (one of Hawaii's largest events) on Oahu. Also in 2005, Jody's original song "Ainakoa" was selected for "Aloha Tofu's" official commercial song.
Jody completed his first DVD entitled "Island Style Ukulele" which will be out in retail stores in Fall 2005.

(From ezFolk.com About ) John Kavanagh loves the uke. It was his first instrument, and his personal wheel keeps turning back to it. It's a soprano guitar, it's an indoor banjo, it's the mandolin's politer cousin. It's its own sweet self.
John uses the "Canadian" tenor uke tuning: ad'f#'b' (D tuning, low 4th) on a 1960s Harmony baritone, modified and hot-rodded with a new spruce top, extra frets, and stuff.
On one of John's many and prolix forum postings he says: "I think uke + guitar is the best string-band duo combination ever. Better than fiddle-guitar, better than two guitars, guitar-mandolin, anything."
He plays jazz, folk, Celtic, hokum, blues, rock, pop, and Baroque music on the uke, but his first CD will be Parlour Music - light-hearted, lyrical ragtime and classical duets.
He can sort of croon like Cliff Edwards a little, but he's too shy.
John went through Chalmers Doane's school uke program in Halifax, Nova Scotia in the 1970s, and was in a group of uke students that toured and recorded. (Celebrity name-drop: James Hill's first uke teacher was in that group, too.)
John wasted the next few decades flirting with other instruments: a music degree playing classical guitar, almost getting another in viola da gamba and early music performance, and playing upright bass professionally. A recent infatuation with clawhammer banjo probably added a few wrinkles to his uke playing, too.
But he never forgot the humble ukulele, and in the 90s he started playing it more often, taking it to jam sessions, and fooling with it around the house. Last year he played bass (and uke) on a producer friend's CD, and asked to be paid in studio time. Every Tuesday he drives for an hour to Jazzland Studios and puts down a few more tracks.

Raised in San Bernardino, California, during the 1970s, Klein's early musical education came from her father Stephen Klein, a teacher and avant-garde animator whose taste ran primarily to Frank Zappa and Classical. Even more importantly, Klein's grandparents regaled her with tales of New York in the 1930s (where her grandfather Marty Klein had worked as a stage magician), instilling a lifelong fascination with pre-World War II American popular culture into the young girl.
By the time Klein moved to Los Angeles to start college in the early '80s, this had translated into an interest in both early jazz recordings and the graphic designs styles of the era. Through the former, Klein discovered early female jazz singers and musicians like, Lil Hardin Armstrong (Louis' wife and early manager) and Blanche Calloway (sister of Cab). The latter hobby led Klein to start collecting sheet music from the 1800s to the Jazz Age, at first purely for the pictures and artwork, then increasingly out of love for the songs themselves.

(Short Bio from Abe's Web Site) - Abraham (or Abe) was born in March 1983 in the U.S. territory of Guam. His father, a U.S. Navy sailor and semi-pro musician, moved the family all over the Pacific Rim eventually settling in Hawaii. It was here that Abraham began playing drums at the age 4. Along with his two older brothers Eric and Glenn (also musicians), they formed a band playing mostly hard rock and heavy metal music. Within a few months, the power trio began showcasing their music at community events and private parties all over Hawaii.
In 1996, at the age of 13, Abe was the Grand Prize winner in an international drumming competition sponsored by Modern Drummer Magazine and New York City's premier drum school, The Drummer's Collective. He was awarded a scholarship to their 4-week summer program. In 1999, another scholarship led him to Berklee College Of Music's summer performance program. In addition to studying and performing with Berklee's acclaimed faculty, the highlight of the program was studying advanced jazz theory with trumpeter Tiger Okoshi. The following year, in 2000, Abe was one of the youngest musicians chosen to participate in Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead Residency Program located at Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center For The Performing Arts. Under the tutelage of Terrance Blanchard, John Patitucci, Wynard Harper, Nathan Davis, and George Cables, Abraham's original composition, "Headache", was chosen for its national debut at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage.
Abe isa 2005 graduate of Berklee College of Music with a Bachelor's of Music Degree in Music Education. He was a recipient of the school's prestigious North American World Tour Scholarship which is awarded to students who excel in performance in their respective instruments.

(UkuleleResources) As a musician who where your early influences?
(Lil’ Rev) Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, Josh White, Sonny Terry, Johnny Cash, Nick Lucas, Uke Ike, Banjo Ikey Robinson, Pete Seeger, Eddie Cantor, Bert Williams are my main ones, but there are a few others as well.
(Lil’ Rev) I assume "Lil' Rev" is a stage name. Where does the name "Lil' Rev" come From?
Rev is short for Revenson, Lil Rev is a nick name from my childhood days.
(UR) Current Performing setup?
(Lil’ Rev) I use the C-Tuning for all my Ukes, Mostly I play with a high G, but I am beginning to branch out more lately with my recent endorsement by G-String Ukuleles. I love the sound of the high G, but sometimes feel limited, when travel permits, I will carry my G-String with low G and my main Axe (National Uke-) tuned with a high G. I use Hilo Brand Strings and Sometimes GHS.
(UR) Musicians are always intersted in gear. And ukulele players, what tuning players use? Can you talk about your current performing setup and some of the problems you might encounter when performing using a ukulele? I know traveling with a ukulele is a lot easier than my guitar.
My main Uke is my Mahogany National Concert Resonator, I love the sustain, the attack is crisp and the fret board is real smooth. Because I play a lot of Blues & Novelty music, this is best suited for my style.
Problems: What problems? I am one who believes that anything is possible on the Uke! I never limit myself, besides, I am old school and thus, I always try to keep my arrangements as simplistic as possible, I am going for taste and feeling like the old blues guys, if you want pyro-technics, I am not the uke player for you! Listen to Norman Blake on the guitar these days, I mean the guy can play anything he wants, but he chooses to go with “less is more,” There is nothing that impresses me about a million notes a minute. I want to hear melody and a little bit or movement around it, anything else is, just showing off!
(UR) How do you feel the internet adds to promoting and presenting your music? I for one have gotten a lot of value from it for my Ukulele and Jazz Guitar web sites and my personal site. Also, allows one to interact with lots of great musicians around the world?
(Lil’ Rev) While so much of what I love and the way I choose to live revolves around simplicity, I feel that technology is a blessing. Even though it has gone on too long! The internet has allowed me to connect with new fans all over the world and selling my CDS thru elderly and Cdbaby has been very good to me. My goal with technology is to strike a balance with nature, I mean, find some things to do that get you away from your ipod, computer, tv and such and go walk in the woods, if you can create harmony with these tools and your time, then it is truly a blessing.
(UR) You recently released a new method book for ukulele and published by Hal Leonard titled "Hal Leonard Ukulele Method Book 1". How did this come about?
(Lil’ Rev) The new book, well, that is another gift from above! I was looking for a chance to share my ideas and teachings with a larger audience, Hal Leonard Approached me and the rest is history, I am thrilled to know that people all over the world now have access to my instructional material, this has been a dream of mine and I am fortunate that this opportunity came my way. The companion DVD to my first book is due out later this summer and my easy solos for Ukulele is due out by the end of the year. The Hal Leonard Ukulele Method Book #2 I am working on right now, it probably won’t see the light of day til late 2007 or even early 2008.
(UR) Can you talk about some of you current and future projects?
(Lil’ Rev) First is to finish The Uke Method Book #2 this year. I am also working on compiling a book my poems for publication. Mostly they are observations from my life on the road and living in the Midwest…a chap book of sorts!
Beyond this I can’t say, life is unpredictable, I have lots of travel plans this year, North Carolina, Michigan, Colorado and my Southwestern Winter Tour will keep me out on the road, for now, I love spending time tending to my garden.
(UR) On the surface one might think that the four strings of a ukule and the limited range would be a problem. I feel having four strings all of a sudden doesn't become a limit but a benefit. How has the ukulele helped you with any other instruments you might play?
The Uke has helped with other instruments in that when I hear some old tune or some new melody in my head, I can hear right away what instrument it would work on, other times, I might experiment with a tunes and try to arrange it for multiple instruments then decide which one it feels the most right on. I love options and I love variety in my life. The Uke is one of many loves of mine! Mostly I lean towards playing Blues, Rags, Old Time, Folk and Originals on the Uke.
(UR) When adapting a song or composition to ukulele what are some of the challenges and how do you deal with them?
As far as arranging is concerned, I can choose, do I want to finger pick this, strum it, play lead line stuff, chord melody like stuff or the combination of these. So really I don’t feel encumbered or burdened by limitations others might feel. I try to focus on the positive side of life, rather then dwell on any perceived deficiencies. The Uke came to me as a gift from an old friend, it has been nothing but a blessing to me in this life time. I know I use the word blessing a lot, but hey, I am grateful for everyday I get to make music and share it with others.

(from artist's site) - Mary J. Martin has been playing ukulele since she was ten years old in Nova Scotia. She was part of a group of uke players that toured eastern and central Canada and Vermont, made albums, and appeared on national radio and television. Sasha von BonBon, founder and leader of the longstanding Toronto burlesque troupe The Scandelles says Martin is their "Uke Diva at Large, Notorious For Blistering Led Zep Solos." A jazz violist as well, she has performed in a few subway stations and with a load of bands, among them The Dears, Dearhunter, Hooch Moon, The Royal Mountain Jamboree, and the folk noir Colossal Egos, all of Montreal.
In Provincetown she was a member of the longstanding, recently disbanded Provincetown Chamber Orchestra.
With Jazz clarinetist Cricket Comey, Martin plays ukulele in their twosome BottleShock.
She was a music critic for papers in Montreal, and will soon have her own radio programme on Provincetown's WOMR, which streams worldwide at www.womr.org.
She frequently appears on stage in New York's Ukulele Cabaret and Boston's Ukulele Noir, both monthly dates. She was an invited performer at the first New York Uke Fest this past April.
She is a strong believer in the ukulele's versatility.

"Mad Tea Party - One of the most difficult groups in the entire Southeast to pigeonhole, this wonderfully entertaining and downright captivating Asheville trio´s name just about says it all. Echoes of acoustic ragtime, Old-Time C & W, creaky carnival themes, early rock and roll (think Ricky Nelson), and R & B all swirl in and out of the mix. Quirky and precocious, they´re an anachronistic version of the sampling aesthetic which fuels alternative hip-hop — but they´re using upright bass, ukulele, fiddle, guitar, kazoo and toy instruments rather than turntables and digital keyboards. It´s a like a mashup between The Mississippi Sheiks and Little House on The Prairie."

He tempers his finger picking style with a sharp sense of humour and gritty lyrics punctuated by the smooth slide of a veteran blues master. Like anyone whose name is a place, Manitoba Hal wears his love for his roots on his sleeve. But those roots aren't just in the prairie soil. Hal's got a songwriter's roots in eerie folk - murder ballads and killer floods - and a player's roots in the deep, dark, fixin' to die blues. This is a man who can sing the word "lonesome" like he means it, and no mistake.

(from artist's site) - My love affair with music, film and theatre seemed to begin when I did. Ballet classes, city choruses, community theatre led to North Carolina School of the Arts High School of Ballet, Boston Conservatory Musical Theatre Program, and finally Berklee College of Music who shocked no one more than me by awarding me the Cleo Lane Award and Berklee Grant. Boston radio is highly supportive to local talent, and gave my band quite a bit of airplay so we could usually be found on WBCN, KISS 108, and WFNX's charts.
On a lark senior year I hooked up with animator Steve Leeper from The Museum School and tried my hand at filmscoring. I scored his short watercolor film "Please Don't Feed The Animals" and later discovered it won many awards and still airs on IFC, Sundance, and plays at festivals.

I listen to a lot of Jazz. I take my piano voicings from Oscar Peterson, I like the style of Wes Montgomery (for my leads - the octaves), i like Charlie Mingus too....
My ukulele arrangements are my own, but the music book I use is The Real Jazz Standards Fake Book (Hal Leonard) C edition, because this has a lot of what they call songs from the "American Songbook". I play the songs in the key that is written in this book. I find that this is almost in my range.
This is some of the coolest music with the fewest.

( from artist's site ) - Olomwaay! Welcome to my website. My name is Typhoon Olopai, I was born and raised on the beautiful island of Saipan. I'm proud to say that I am Refalawasch, a member of the Aliingeytau clan. From an early age I've been involved in music at some level. Starting as a guitar player in my youth, I later picked up ukulele and haven't put it down since. I taught myself how to play both instrument and also learned by watching my aunts and uncles jamming with my father. All those weekend BBQ's finally paid off!
I studied music at the University of Hawaii and since then I began adapting my techniques with styles ranging from classical, jazz, world and Latin. I also taught myself how to play the bass guitar which I later ended up playing in a Christian band in Hawaii called "New Seed".
I am currently residing in Hollywood, Florida. I started Pacific Rhythms as a solo uke player. Now I'm a freelancer performing with several prominent Polynesian groups in South Florida. I began teaching ukulele to several ukesters and I'm presently putting a club together called Florida Ukulele Network (F.U.N.).

(from artist's site ) - After playing fingerstyle and rock guitar for about 30 years--with a brief banjo foray taken in the early 1980s--I discovered the uke in June 2005. Now I pretty much only play the uke. Primarily am interested in emulating or creating solo instrumental versions of songs I like and sometime I even work out songs I don't really like. Also am very much inspired by the technical virtuousity of Jake and James and other killer progressive uke players.
I play four main instruments. The first two are tuned to re-entrant high G, the next to re-entrant FCEA, and the last to low G:
I record directly into a Sony PCM D1 Portable Digital Recorder--a rather expensive but very easy to use unit that has two high quality condenser mics set in an X-Y pattern and records WAV files--and then master with Ozone 3 software.

Be sure to check out Cali's MySpace page. She has a gorgeous voice.
(from artist's site) - Entertainer, musician and comedienne, Cali Rose loves to sing, play the piano and write--both songs and stories. She's thrilled that people actually pay her to do this!
Cali has been playing the piano since the ripe old age of six, and according to family legend, began singing as soon as she could talk. As a young adult, she took a slight detour from music, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and later working in an emergency room, while attending nursing school.
But, she soon found her way back to performing, which has been her "real" job for the last 25 years. She learned her craft in piano bars, so it's safe to say, very little shocks her these days. After completing a thirteen year run on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, she has focused her energies on her one-woman shows, which she performs across Southern California for groups, big and small.
Cali is also an award winning songwriter, with three albums. Tunes from her latest comedy CD, "Cali Rose Gets Goofy," are getting radio play all over the world.
In her shows, Cali deftly combines great vintage and popular songs with comedy, story-telling and audience participation. It's a crazy world. We need all the music and laughter we can get.
Cali Rose sings hundreds of vintage and popular songs that you know and love while she accompanies herself on the keyboards and ukulele. Yes, she's the whole band. Cali loves to entertain, too. That means she tells amusing stories and encourages audience participation in her very fun ONE-WOMAN SHOWS.

What the critics say... Successfully blending the sounds of jazz blues and swing, Gerald Ross has created a guitar style uniquely his own. Gerald Ross
Ukulele Stomp
(UkeTone, 2006)
It's hard to say whether the ukulele is making a comeback -- if it will ever again be
as popular as it was in the 1920s and '30s. Certainly many musicians in a number of
different and sometimes unexpected genres such as rock 'n' roll and pop are taking it
up. Not only musicians, either. Warren Buffett, the second richest man in the world,
plays one. (I wonder what Bill Gates plays: a piccolo?)
The ukulele is a Mini Cooper among the SUVs of the music world. It has neither the volume, nor the tonal range of guitars, violins and other acoustic stringed instruments, but if you know how, you can get a lot of musical mileage out of it.
Gerald Ross knows how. Long a familiar face on the Ann Arbor and national music scene for his work with the Lost World String Band, among others, Ross is an excellent guitar player who is also accomplished on Hawaiian steel guitar and Cajun accordion. However, on his latest recording it's the uke that wins pole position.
On Ukulele Stomp, Ross expertly steers his way through a wide variety of musical styles from Western swing to jazz and blues, and of course a few requisite Hawaiian tunes, smoothly shifting gears from Irving Berlin to the Beatles, from "That's Amore" to "Chattanooga Choo Choo." Every track is tastefully arranged and masterfully performed -- Ross plays all the instruments on the album -- and every tune serves as yet another fine vehicle for displaying the ukulele's unique capabilities. Ukulele Stomp belongs in the winner's circle.

(From Roy Sakuma web site) Roy Sakuma credits the ukulele, a song and inspirational mentors with helping him turn his young life around after being kicked out of high school.
In 1964, when he heard a hit song, "Sushi", by master ukulele virtuoso Herb "Ohta-San" Ohta, he sought him out and became an avid student. Roy wore out the frets of his ukulele, practicing eight to 10 hours a day. At the age of 16 he set out to become the best ukulele player in the world. Learning from Ohta-San opened up a whole new world for him. Soon Ohta San asked him to teach his classes while he went on tour in Japan. Roy immediately discovered that his true calling was not in performing but in teaching. When Ohta San encouraged his young protege to venture out on his own, he didn't follow in Ohta San's footsteps as a performing artist. Instead, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to teaching. Roy taught for Ohta-San and Kamaka Ukulele until he opened his first of four teaching studios, Roy Sakuma Ukulele Studios, in 1974.
Since 1971, Roy Sakuma and his sponsors have been keeping the ukulele alive and well by presenting the Annual Ukulele Festival.
Presented every July at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand in Waikiki, it is by far the largest of it's kind in the world, attracting an audience of thousands to a free two-hour concert that showcases the finest ukulele players, along with national celebrities, Hawaii's top entertainers, and an ukulele orchestra of more than 800 students, mostly children.
In 2004, Roy and Kathy Sakuma established Ukulele Festival Hawaii, a charitable non-profit organization.

This is not a CD that attempts to assault the listener with ego or insistent playing. Rather, it is an album that clearly realizes the beauty of the melodies of each tune played. Tunes like “There Will Never be Another You”, “Black Orpheus”, “My Favorite Things”, “Milestones”, “Autumn Leaves”, “So What”, “Cute” and other standards, are performed with deference to the musical statements that can be found within the harmonic and melodic content of each tune, as are the two original tunes written by Sheller: “Kelle Belle” and “Midnight Café”. In other words, there is some nice playing going on here.
Sheller’s single line playing is smooth and straightforward with an effortless quality that can only be portrayed by someone who has been playing and listening for some time. And his chordal work is skillful with fat sounding voicings that work very well in this trio setting. Just check out the gorgeous chordal arrangement Sheller comes up with on the original tune “Woman Child” (written by producer Chuck Anderson). Very nice indeed.
The remaining members, Daoud Shaw on drums and Steve Beskrone on electric bass, complement Sheller’s playing by providing a strong rhythmic foundation for Sheller to play off of. However, Beskrone gets off some nice solos on a few tunes showing that he can grab the spotlight when need be.
Overall, this is a very nice CD to have in your collection and I look forward to hopefully more Midnight visits to the Jazz Cafe. ( review from JazzGuitarLife.com )

Countless hours of practicing and search for his own style, Bruce finally decides to produce his own first album in 2005.
Bruce has his own band called Bruce Shimabukuro Band. Their mission is to spread the spirit of Aloha through their music. Their live performance is fun and comfortable like you are with friends at home. They have successful live performances in Hawaii and Japan already.

Shot in New Orleans and Hawaii during the summer of 2006
(From Jake's bio) Jake Shimabukuro was born on November 3, 1976, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Having learned to play the ukulele from the young age of four, Shimabukuro marked his professional debut in 1998 after becoming a member of the group, Pure Heart, a few years after graduating from high school. Shimabukuro's appearance dramatically altered traditional perceptions of ukulele music. Playing with incredible technique and great feeling, he covers all types of music from Classical music to Jazz, Rock, Blues, Funk and of course, improvisation that comes naturally to the ukulele, Shimabukuro continues to be a source of inspiration to the Hawaiian music scene.
Known for lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques, Jake Shimabukuro is a master of the ukulele. The 28-year-old virtuoso shatters musical boundaries. Not only does he play styles previously "taboo" on the four-string, two-octave instrument, but also he is creating music never before thought possible. While Jake has great respect and love for traditional Hawaiian ukulele music, his mission is to show everyone that the ukulele is capable of so much more.
“Jake’s natural musicianship, powerhouse technique and infectious energy will open you up to a whole new world of musical experience.” - Steve Sano

(From artist's web site) Melvern Taylor writes songs and plays the ukulele. He is backed up by his Fabulous Meltones. Together they make records and play shows.Once upon a time, people like the Everly Brothers, Carole King and Sam Cooke made pop songs—timeless, accessible and instantly familiar music. Melvern Taylor and The Fabulous Meltones craft brilliant songs that remind us that “pop” isn’t a dirty word.
Taylor’s dreamy voice is a singular wonder. He grew up in Andover, Mass., secretly listening to his older siblings’ Beatles and Stones records. “They had an acoustic guitar I wasn’t supposed to touch, too,” says Taylor. “One rainy Saturday when I was in seventh grade, I sat in my room with their guitar and an Eagles songbook.” Taylor taught himself to play guitar from the book, but the problems with having such a narrow repertoire quickly became apparent—especially when he played with others. “They’d say ‘Hey, do you know ‘Iron Man?’” says Taylor with a chuckle, “and I’d say, ‘No. Do you know ‘Witchy Woman?’”
Check Melvern's CD: Fabuloso on iTunes
Fabuloso is a 12 track compilation of songs featuring “Angel on My
Shoulder,” “Sad and Blue,” “It’s Not My
Fault,” and “You and Me (and my Ukulele),” is Taylor’s
third release, and promises to be the best as of yet. Taylor’s silky
vocals, addictive melodies, and well-suited ukulele provide the album with a
fresh, honest, and unique pop sound.

( from artist's site ) - Out of the love for Island and Country-Western music comes the sounds of the Tiki Cowboys. The music is ukulele and hand percussion, written and performed by Eric "Baron" Behrenfeld. Baron has been a working drummer and percussionist in Chicago for over 20 years. The Tiki Cowboys is his solo tropical departure from the usual tenure of playing Blues here in Chicago. But fear not, there are inklings of blues woven throughout this sonic island fantasy, with surf-twang greasing the neo-primitive rhythms.
Baron also performs with the Ukulele band, the Windy City Islanders.

Herbert Khaury (April 12, 1932 – November 30, 1996), better known by the stage name Tiny Tim, was an American singer, ukulele player, and musical archivist. He was most famous for his rendition of Tiptoe Through The Tulips sung in his distinctive high falsetto / vibrato voice. He was generally thought of as a novelty act, though his records display a wide knowledge of American songs. Tiny didn't have a legal middle name, he came up with Buckingham because it sounded like royalty.

From Bryan Tolentino
Aloha my name is Bryan L. Tolentino. I am a self taught ‘ukulele player. I started playing the ‘ukulele at the age of 10. At the age of 12, my best friend Asa Young first introduced me to playing Hawaiian music on the ‘ukulele. Our early influences were the musical groups, “The Son’s of Hawai’i” and “The Sunday Mānoa.” After graduating from St. Louis High School in 1979, my friends and I decided to form a musical group called “The Side Order Band.” The group consisted of Asa Young on 12-string guitar, Delwin Beazley on 6-string guitar, and Chris Kamaka on upright bass, and me on ‘ukulele. We performed at various functions throughout the island of O’ahu.
During the summer of 1980, I traveled to Japan for the first time with Hula Halau Puka’ikapuaokalani, Kumu Hula Ellen Castillo. We entertained in Japan at various locations for 5 weeks. In 1983, The Side Order Band began playing at the well-known Willow’s Restaurant on O’ahu. We performed Monday through Saturday nights for little over a year. During this time, we traveled with Governor George Ariyoshi and members of the Hawai’i Visitor’s Bureau to Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore to promote tourism in Hawai’i. The most memorable highlight for me was performing for the King of Malaysia.
In 1985, I began my career at the United States Postal Service (USPS) and I am currently at the Downtown Station. Between 1985 through 1990, I choose to limit my music engagements to a minimum to focus on my new employment, marriage and starting a family.
In August 1991, I began performing with local entertainer Karen Keawehawai’i in the Marlin Room at the Pacific Beach Hotel along with Ku’uipo Kumukahi, Chris Kamaka and Greg Sardinha for about two years. I returned to Japan performing with Karen Keawehawai’i under the coordination of Mr. Yasuhiko Ariga (U’ilani Productions) in 1993. Since then I have performed in Japan on numerous occasions with various Hawaiian music entertainers.
From 1994-1998, Ku’uipo Kumukahi, Chris Kamaka, Greg Sardinha and I played at the poolside at the Sheraton Waikīkī Hotel. I currently perform with Jerry Santos and Hōkū Zuttermeister at Chai’s Island Bistro at Aloha Tower on Monday’s for the past five years.
Throughout my professional career as a musician, I have performed and continue to perform locally and abroad with notable Hawaiian entertainers such as: Karen Keawehawai’i, Aunty Genoa Keawe, Ku’uipo Kumukahi, Marlene Sai, Raiatea Helm, Jerry Santos and Olomana, O’Brian Eselu, Frank Hewett, Byron Yasui, Benny Chong, Herb Ohta, Jr., ‘Elua Kane, Sonny Lim, Keoki Kahumoku and Jake Shimabukuro. I have also performed with award winning hula halau: Na Wai ‘Eha O Puna, Halau Maoli Pua, Keali’ika’apunihonua Ke’ena A’o Hula, Ka Pa Hula O Kauanoe O Wa’ahila, and Kuhai Halau O Kawaikapuokalani Pa Olapa Kahiko.
In May 2005, I opened another chapter in my life by releasing my first solo CD entitled “Ka ‘Ukulele Lele” distributed by Aloha Music International (AMI).
I have been married for the past 20 years to Felice and together we have two sons, Micah Bryan (17) and Sean Keoni (13).
Aloha,
Bryan Tolentino

BOSTON GLOBE - Scott Alarik - Feb 1, 2007
Equal parts sassy bluegrassers and moody urban songwriters, jazzy jammers and sighing torch singers, Tripping Lily is nearly a genre unto itself. The folk-pop quartet formed in Nashville, but calls Boston home now, and its sound appeals to neotrad and alt fans alike. Guitars, mandolins, and fiddles prance behind airy, quirky melodies that feel both rootsy and modern. The harmonies lull like lullabies, then jolt as if shot through jumper cables.

Tony Penultimate is the pseudonym of Peter Brooke Turner of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. He has released two albums of his own quirky songs which show all the ill digested influences of Jake Thackray, Frank Zappa, Tom Lehrer, the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band, the Temperance Seven and Ivor Cutler, with the occasional touch of Peter Sellers and The Beach Boys…
Tony is best known for his towering performances (he's 6'8"!) with the international touring group, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. Their most recent album, 'The Secret of Life' featured one of Tony's songs - 'The Stage', and the band toured Japan in March 2004, as well as a sold out run at the Barbican Theatre, London. The Uke's also performed on Jools Holland's Hootenanny TV show on New Years Eve 2005 along with other acts Franz Ferdinand, Basement Jaxx and Eric Clapton. The Ukes were recently profiled in Time Magazine and are due to tour Sweden, Australia and Germany in 2006.

(from artist's site) Years ago, Joe would perform original tunes on his ukulele at a small bar with a house band (Tim on bass) backing him up. Joe had a Big Dream of a ukulele band, but was usually stuck in the backline as a drummer. As fate would have it, Joe was hired, as a drummer, to play with a local band, where he met Jason and Dave. The ukulele was a great way to pass the time and either make others laugh, or drive them crazy. Many hours of ukulele madness were spent in the van and hotel rooms. In 2006, the Northern Califonia ukulele band, Ukesperience, was formed. A primo blend of folk, rock, and island vibes, our music is appealing to all ages. From local coffeeshops, to private parties, weddings, summer festivals, and everything in between, our warm sound will make your hips sway.
With an endorsement by Pono ‘ukuleles from Wahiawa, Hawaii, Ukesperience is listed among these ‘ukulele legends and performers: Abe Lagrimus Jr., Ben Chong, Bruce Shimabukuro, Chino Montero, Ernie Cruz Jr., Jin Takuma, Ledward Kaapana, Lyle Ritz, Roy Sakuma, and others. Ukesperience’s natural sound strongly emphasizes the ukulele, producing, not just the usual standards, but interesting and innovative tunes as well. Ukesperience has been featured on Ukefarm.com’s Radio playlist and Ukecast.com’s Summer Edition #219.

Uku the mighty is a ukulele based AcoustiPop trio from the western Washington. The world has plenty of guitar based bands. It’s time for a new sound to emerge on as a proverbial blip on the collective radar screens of America.
Blending the sounds that they’ve picked up from the popular to the obscure and mixing in the sounds that only they can hear in their heads, UKU The Mighty has a harmonic alchemy and rhythmic gumbo that has power and intrigue.

(From web site bio) The Ukulele Orchestra is a group of all-singing, all-strumming Ukulele players, who use instruments bought with loose change, and who believe that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation, as long as they are played on the Ukulele. A concert by the Ukulele Orchestra is a Funny, Virtuosic, Twanging, Singing, Awesome, Foot-Stomping Obituary of Rock-n-Roll and Melodious Light Entertainment featuring only the "bonsai guitar" and a menagerie of voices; no drums, no pianos, no backing tracks, and no banjos. A collision of post-punk performance and toe-tapping oldies. See the universe in the grain of a Ukulele. You may never think about music in the same way once you've been exposed to the Ukes' depraved musicology. The Orchestra use the limitations of the instrument to create a musical freedom with Ukuleles (little ones, big ones, high ones, low ones) revealing unsuspected insights into popular music. From Tchaikovsky to Nirvana via Otis Reading the Orchestra takes you on a world tour with only hand luggage and gives the listener "One Plucking Thing after Another".

( January 15, 2008) Victoria has a new CD out titled Chameleon. There are samples available online on her web site and MySpace page.
(From web site bio) - Victoria Vox made her big debut at 6 years old, singing “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” in her babysitter’s garage in Algoma, WI. Through twenty-some years of experience, she has also tackled a Casio keyboard, violin, oboe, trumpet, guitar, bass and ukulele.
Missing her high school junior prom to study abroad in France, Vox bought her first guitar with her monthly allowance. A new instrument and an inspirational environment turned her away from her keyboard top-40 musings and band-geek rut.
Vox continued her higher education at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. Meticulous about honing her craft, the then pink-haired “conservative” punk-rocker earned a degree in Songwriting and was awarded a Berklee Achievement Scholarship and the Vince Gill Songwriting Award.
Enchanted by chord progressions and song structure, Vox continued her higher education at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. A degree in songwriting was right up her alley, plus, the male-to-female ratio was 11-1! Meticulous about honing her craft, the pink-haired conservative punk-rocker worked on tweaking her songs, and eventually collaborated other talented Berklee students to record Victoria Vox and the Ultra Pink Bicycle Incident, a full-band album released in 2000. Her hard work and dedication later thanked her in the form of a Berklee Achievement Scholarship and the Vince Gill Songwriting Award.

(from artist's site) - Guitar, drums, violin and three voices. That's an oversimplified description of New Orleans' newest musical group, Chappy. The band, headed by guitarist Michael Wagner, combines complex vocal harmonies with intricate instrumentation to achieve a sound that is far greater than the sum of its parts. Wagner, backed up by drummer David Sobel (New Orleans Klezmer Allstars) and violinist Denise Bonis (Zydepunks, Jakarta Skyscraper) creates a sound that mixes elements of folk, pop, blues, bluegrass, and even african guitar. The end result is a sound that is at-once familiar and entirely new.
