Hi, I’m Mike Upton, founder of Kala Brand Music Co. and Kala Brand Ukulele. I became acquainted with the charm of the ukulele at an early age as my Dad would strum the "uke" and sing old standards, entertaining the family, neighbors, and worshiping in Church. The sweet, soothing sound was the best pacifier for a fidgety child like yours truly, so as I grew up, you guessed it, I started playing the bass. Four strings like the uke, only much larger and able to rattle your teeth with the proper amplification i.e. Ampeg SVT 300 Watt Tube Head through a 8x10 cabinet. Anyway, back to the ukulele, I re-engaged with the uke while living on heavenly Lanikai Beach in 1991 with my lovely wife, Wendy. You were just starting to hear and see more and more people playing ukulele back then. My interest continued as I became the Hawaii Sales Representative for the Hohner Company in 1997. I found out very quickly that there were very few quality, affordable ukuleles available in the Islands. So with that in mind, I set out and with some help developed the popular ukulele line. In July of 2005 I went out on my own to start Kala Ukulele to continue to expand what is possible in the realm of quality, affordable instruments for the Ukulele Enthusiast and Novice alike.

Chicago IL, July 2007. Oscar Schmidt by Washburn, a U.S.Music Corp company, introduces six new ukuleles. Oscar Schmidt has been a leader in the ukulele industry for over 125 years and continues its tradition of innovation through the introduction of these models.
The OU250BELL is a reissue of a vintage Washburn "bell" shape ukulele popular in the 1920's. It features a solid Trembesi top, back and sides with ivory body binding, abalone logo, rosette and fret dot inlays. The ukulele has deluxe Grover GH305 tuners with ebony buttons, bone nut and saddle and GHS strings. Deluxe hard shell case included. Retail $389.90.
The five additional models that are being released by Oscar Schmidt include the OU280SWK (retail $899.90), the OU220SWK concert ukulele (retail $399.90), the OU240SWK tenor ukulele (retail $429.90), the OU6 tenor ukulele (retail $329.90) and the OU5LCE concert acoustic-electric cutaway ukulele (retail $359.90). The OU280SWK features a solid top, back and sides of beautiful Hawaiian Koa harvested on the Big Island of Hawaii. (from Andy Powers's site) - Andy Powers grew up in a music-loving family in Oceanside, California. At the age of five Andy, the son of a carpenter and his artist wife, had his first workbench and shortly thereafter began playing piano. Andy took up playing the guitar when he was eight. In a house where musical instruments, tools and wood were all readily available, curiosity got the better of him and he began his first attempts at building guitars before the age of ten. With design and sound refinement the instruments began to improve tremendously, and Andy began selling the instruments to customers while he was still a teenager. Having been encouraged by his parents to pursue the arts, he began to explore the world of traditional inlayed art, using his instruments as a canvas.

Les Rietfors Age 53, called to God February 17, 2005. A life-long resident of Kailua, he was born there on October 3, 1951. Les passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, after a short illness. A loving and devoted husband and father, he is survived by Cheryl, his wife of 25 years, and daughters Amanda Rietfors and Ashley (Ken) Casazza of Fresno, California. He is also survived by his father Fritz (Lois) Rietfors, jr. of Kamuela and brothers Ron (Marge) of Kamuela and Ken (Linda) of Kailua as well as six nephews and five nieces. His mother, Esther Hodde Rietfors, preceded him in death.

The Jazz Uke, acoustic version
Corresponding in size to the tenor ukulele, the Uke has a scale length of 39 cm. It is built like an acoustic archtop guitar, with parallel bracing and handcrafted arched top and back. The one-piece bridge provides a very direct transmission of string vibration to the body. The Uke is amplified by a single-coil pickup made by Coil Tec.

As close as I can figure it started back in about 1966. My uncle was a surfer, and he once gave my dad a three foot stone Tiki as a gift. My dad put it out under the big tree next to my play house, where it stood for almost twenty years until said tree was cut down and the Tiki disappeared. But back then that Tiki was about as close to magic as it gets. It made an impression I guess. I have been carving Tikis as long as I can remember, but things really got going in 1993 on the day my wife and I drove up north for our honeymoon. We brought along a Tiki to leave at the house we rented, and on the long drive the question arose, aside from myself, where can one get a good Tiki? I had scoured the good will, and all the local thrift stores, but it was hit and miss, and the local Tiki bars turned up nothing, souvenir-wise. There was, of course, Hawaii, but that was too involved for the average potential Tiki seeker. I mean, where can a normal working Joe go to get a decent Tiki in a hurry?
