Eleanor Rigby

C Tuning (G C E A)
with low G

Song Info

Eleanor Rigby - is a song by The Beatles, originally released on the 1966 album Revolver. The song was primarily written by Paul McCartney,[1] although in an interview conducted with Playboy magazine in 1980, John Lennon claimed that "the first verse was his and the rest are basically mine."[2] Pete Shotton, a close friend of Lennon who was present at the time, said "Though John (whose memory could be extremely erratic) was to take credit, in one of his last interviews, for most of the lyrics, my own recollection is that 'Eleanor Rigby' was one 'Lennon-McCartney' classic in which John's contribution was virtually nil."[3] McCartney also says that Lennon helped on about "half a line". It remains one of the Beatles' most recognizable and unique songs, with a double string quartet arrangement by George Martin and its striking lyrics about loneliness, continuing the transformation of the Beatles started in Rubber Soul from a mainly pop-oriented act to a more serious and experimental studio band.

Giant Steps

C Tuning (G C E A)
with low G

Song Info

Giant Steps - is a 1960 studio album by jazz musician John Coltrane, released on Atlantic Records.

Giant Steps was his second album to be recorded by the Atlantic label, and marked the first time that all of the pieces on a recording had been composed by him. The recording exemplifies Coltrane's melodic phrasing that came to be known as sheets of sound, and features the use of a new harmonic concept now referred to as Coltrane changes. Jazz musicians continue to use the "Giant Steps" chord progression as a practice piece and as a gateway into modern jazz improvisation. The ability to play over the "Giant Steps"/Coltrane cycle remains to this day one of the benchmark standards by which a jazz musician's improvising skill is measured.

The album is also considered to be Coltrane's farewell to bebop. He ventured into the territory of modal jazz shortly afterwards.

Satin Doll

C Tuning (G C E A)
with low G

Song Info

Satin Doll - is a jazz standard written by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Written in 1953, the song has been recorded countless times, by such artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, 101 Strings, and Nancy Wilson.

Johnny Mercer was often asked to write lyrics to already popular songs. The lyrics to "Satin Doll" were written after the song was already a hit in its instrumental version. Ellington used "Satin Doll" as the closing number at most of his concerts.

It is possible that the music was not composed by Ellington but by pianist-arranger Billy Strayhorn, who worked closely with Ellington.

It has been recorded in several versions, by Corea himself as well as by other artists.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps

C Tuning (G C E A)G

Song Info

While My Guitar Gently Weeps - "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a rock ballad written by George Harrison for The Beatles on their double album The Beatles (also known as The White Album)

Arrangement for a low "G", C tuning and in the original key. This is based on the arrangement that I perform in concert in a George Harrison medley with Here Comes the Sun.

Here Comes the Sun feels like it was written on a uke. This is quite possible as George always traveled with two ukes. One for him and one just in case someone else wanted to play.

The Trouble with TAB

UL43
Created: 15 March 2009
Updated: 15 March 2009

Lesson Info

TAB, short for tablature is a form of musical notation using numbers and letters on a staff that that corresponds to the number of strings of fretted string instrumen. Theses number tell a player which fret to place their fingers on rather than which pitches to play.

TAB has a history with lute music from centuries ago and has found wide use in the music publishing industry catering to the guitarist who can’t or doesn’t want to learn to read. TAB doesn’t exist in mainstream music, primarily by some music magazines and on the internet.

Learning to read TAB can be accomplished in minutes. Learning to read standard music notation takes a little longer.

An Introduction to Creating Solo Ukulele Arrangements

UL125
Created: 23 June 2008
Updated: 06 October 2008

Lesson Info

Creating a solo ukulele chord arrangements is as simple as harmonizing a melody by playing a chord with that has that melody note as the top note. This style of playing is called “Chord Melody” or ”Melody and Chord’”. The hard part comes with: What chord voicing? When should I play a chord? When are single notes OK? And a few other issues usually pop up.

Luckily we don’t have to wait for monster chops, a massive chord vocabulary or endless hours of practicing scales and chords to play the ukulele. Although practice is good. All we need are a few chords and single notes and we can have hours of ukulele fun just doodling around on the uke and creating simple melody and chord solo ukulele arrangements. What you already know can lead to hours of fun.

My Take on TAB!

Wikipedia states: "An alternate usage of the word "tab" is common on the internet, where it can also refer to conventional chord symbols (for harmony), or note names (for melody)."

This a departure from what has been traditionally known as TAB. There a lot of sites on the internet, especially ukulele sites popping up that claim to be TAB sites. These are mostly sites with the chords and lyrics to songs, with chord diagrams.

For sites listed here I'll stick with the traditional, pre Internet, definition of what TAB is.

Dominator

Links

A GREAT collection of ukulele TABS from "Dominator" aka Dominic Pieranunzio are available.

The TABS are quality – but the standard music notation, especially the rhythmic notation is very hard to read. There are a lot of rhythmic values that cross the mid bar without using a ties. This makes it very hard to read as musician that can read music.

information-lite.png Info click here to view more info

(from Dominator's site ) A little about me: Primarily a self taught guitarist, pursuing the ukulele for approximately six years, I have spent the last couple of years concentrating on the ukulele. Not being able to find tablature for the ukulele in the same quality and format as was (and still is) available for the guitar is the motivation behind this site. Since books containing ukulele tab were not available, I decided I would try to transcribe the songs myself and make them available for others to learn from as well.

  • Dominator Ukulele Tabs - link

Dominic "Dominator" Pieranunzio has some of the best ukulele TABs available online. And, a great player as well.

The Dominator uses Power Tab Editor. The only issue I have is the standard music notation. For musicians used to reading standard music notation the rhythmic notation is very hard to read. In common, 4/4 time there are a lot of cases where a note is sustained over the mid bar. Making it very hard to read for a player used to reading professionally prepared charts.
