Hawaiian Definitions of KALA (pronounced Kah’ la)
Hi, I’m Mike Upton, founder of Kala Brand Music Co. and Kala Brand Ukulele. I became acquainted with the charm of the ukulele at an early age as my Dad would strum the "uke" and sing old standards, entertaining the family, neighbors, and worshiping in Church. The sweet, soothing sound was the best pacifier for a fidgety child like yours truly, so as I grew up, you guessed it, I started playing the bass. Four strings like the uke, only much larger and able to rattle your teeth with the proper amplification i.e. Ampeg SVT 300 Watt Tube Head through a 8x10 cabinet. Anyway, back to the ukulele, I re-engaged with the uke while living on heavenly Lanikai Beach in 1991 with my lovely wife, Wendy. You were just starting to hear and see more and more people playing ukulele back then. My interest continued as I became the Hawaii Sales Representative for the Hohner Company in 1997. I found out very quickly that there were very few quality, affordable ukuleles available in the Islands. So with that in mind, I set out and with some help developed the popular ukulele line. In July of 2005 I went out on my own to start Kala Ukulele to continue to expand what is possible in the realm of quality, affordable instruments for the Ukulele Enthusiast and Novice alike.
Since 1916, Kamaka Hawaii, Inc. has prided itself on producing only ukuleles of the finest quality -- durable, exquisite instruments that improve with age. Like the ukuleles, the company itself continues to withstand the test of time. The company's longevity shows its commitment to both customer and employee alike, and reflects other important values as well.
The producers of a documentary entitled "Heart Strings: The Story of the Kamaka 'Ukulele," describe the Kamaka history this way: "Theirs is a story of hard work, fortitude, honesty and creativity as seen through a distinctly Hawaiian point of view, rooted in such concepts as Aloha (unconditional love), Malama (to serve and care for), and Pono (doing what's right)."
Kamaka Hawaii, Inc. especially exemplified these values when they first hired disabled employees in 1955, a time when physically-challenged individuals were virtually unemployable because they were viewed as liabilities. When Sam Jr. took over the business after the death of Sam Sr., he learned that good employees were hard to find. His wife, Geraldine, was an ocupational therapist, and she suggested that the company consider employing disabled people. Sam Jr. took her advice and hired two hearing-impaired individuals, paving the way for other disabled workers. The company found that the hearing-impaired craftsmen were conscientious, dedicated, and highly motivated toward perfection. And with their heightened sense of touch, the craftsmen's "disability" turned out to be a tremendous asset. In a Honolulu Magazine interview (November 1992), Sam Jr. said: "…we discovered that deaf people can measure the thickness of sound boxes with complete accuracy. They drum their fingers on the wood and feel the vibrations."

(from the Kepasa Ukulele web site ) - Reason for Building Ukuleles- I can't think of a good reason not to build ukuleles! I got bitten by the ukulele bug in early 2004. One thing lead to another, and I figured if I could play them, I could build them. Easier said than done.

Custom and stock instruments, strings and more.
Ko’olau Guitars and 'Ukuleles are professional quality, hand crafted instruments. The shop is located in Kaneohe, on the Island of Oahu, Hawaii, approximately fifteen minutes from Honolulu, at the foot of the the beautiful Ko’olau Mountains.
These are some of the best Ukuleles around.

Selected Ko'olau strings are available right here on my online store. These are the strings that I use on several of my tenor ukuleles.
I really like the new 'Alohi Series and have them on my CS Contemporary Tenor from Ko'olau. I go back and forth between the 'Alohi Series and the Savarez strings that I have been using for years.

“A strum is the execution of a rhythmic pattern — in a specific style”
One of the first skills a ukulele player learns is the art and craft of strumming, playing rhythm. This refers to an accompaniment technique suitable for the singer, singer - songwriter or someone who plays a support role for another instrument.
Strumming requires a specific set of skills. They are: 1) Memorization of chords 2) The ability to switch chords smoothly and 3) The ability to choose and execute a suitable rhythmic strum. It is this 3rd skill that is our focus in “A Guide to Ukulele Strums & Rhythmic Patterns”.
Though strumming looks natural to the casual observer, it is anything but natural to the beginning ukulele player. Even experienced players have difficulty in identifying and executing certain strums. Though this is one of those topics that is typically taken for granted, there is much to learn about rhythmic feels, accents, dynamics, strum direction, feel, percussive accents, idiomatic styles and tempo variation.
First and foremost, the subject of strumming is inseparably linked to rhythm. Though an ability to read rhythm is helpful, it’s not necessary to profit from this material.
