California (california.shtml) | Updated: 01-Jan-2009 - 02:48

Took a Fall 2007 trip to California ( Palm Springs, Indio and Cerritos (LA area) for a ukulele fest). Visited Josha Tree National Park very briefly and the Palm Desert area as well as the beach at Huntington Beach. On my list of places to see in Southern California are The Salton Sea and surrounding areas

The State of California is the most populous state of the United States. Located on the Pacific coast of North America, it is bordered by Oregon, Nevada and Arizona in the United States, and Baja California in Mexico. Its capital is Sacramento. The state's four largest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco. California is known for its diverse climate and ethnically diverse population. The state has 58 counties.

Alta California was first colonized by the Spanish Empire in 1769, and after Mexican independence in 1821, continued as part of Mexico. Following one brief week as the independent California Republic in 1846, and the conclusion of the Mexican-American war in 1848, California was annexed by the United States and was admitted to the Union as the thirty-first state on September 9, 1850. Hollywood discovered Palm Springs as early as about 1919. The desert was considered a choice filming spot for many silents, and stars such as Rudolph Valentino, Ernest Torrence, and Theda Bara could be easily spotted in town. Since then, Palm Springs has become known as "The Playground of the Stars." Many have had homes in the City or have stayed at famous places such as the El Mirador Hotel and Charles Farrell's Racquet Club. Spotting a movie star walking down the street, shopping or in a restaurant was a common occurrence.

  • San Jacinto Peak

San Jacinto Peak is the highest peak in Riverside County, California. It is part of the San Jacinto Mountains, and lies within Mount San Jacinto State Park. To the east, the peak towers over the city of Palm Springs; to the west, it borders the mountain community of Idyllwild. The peak is also frequently named Mount San Jacinto. The steep escarpment of its north face, above Snow Creek, climbs over 10,000 feet (3 km) in 7 miles (11.3 km). This is one of the largest gains in elevation over such a small horizontal distance in the contiguous United States.

  • WidipediA: Wind Chill

Wind chill is the apparent temperature felt on exposed skin, which is a function of the air temperature and wind speed. The wind chill temperature (often popularly called the wind chill factor) is always lower than the air temperature, except at higher temperatures where wind chill is considered less important. In cases where the apparent temperature is higher than the air temperature, the heat index is used instead.

  • WidipediA: Heat Index

A good example of the difference between heat index and true temperature would be comparing the climates of Miami and Phoenix. Miami averages around 90 °F in summer due to the easterly trade winds coming from the Atlantic Ocean, but it has a high humidity (e.g. 75%). Phoenix averages around 104 °F in summer, but typically has a low humidity (e.g. 10%). According to the heat index, the relative temperature in Miami will be 109.5 °F, but the relative temperature in Phoenix will be lowered due to the lower humidity, to around 98.6 °F. Given clear skies, Miami is likely to feel hotter than Phoenix.
