Where are the Chord Diagrams?

With more than one way to play any chord, chord diagrams are not shown with most charts – only the chord name is shown.

For players that already know several voicings for any chord, just play what you already now. For players that don't know a particular chord, there are example chords to play each song available by selecting the "Chords" tab above.

Use these songs to explore a variety of ways to play chords for any particular song.

Moondance

Common Keys: A Dorian
First Melodic Interval: P5 ↑ M2

Moondance is a popular song written by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison and is the title song on his 1970 album Moondance.

Morrison did not release the song as a single until November 1977, seven and a half years after the album was released. It reached the Billboard Hot 100, charting at #92. The single's B-side, "Cold Wind in August" had been released in the same year, on his latest album at the time, A Period of Transition.

"Moondance" is the most frequently played song by Morrison in concert, as it is the only song known to have been played over a thousand times.

Performance Notes for Moondance

Here is how I remember the melody of Moondance:

  1. A Dorian
  2. A Aeolian

One hard part of the song is keeping track of the 16 measures of the Am7 to Bm7. If your are not singing Moondance yourself simply counting the bars really helps.

  • Chords Used in Moondance - - C Tuning, High or Low G

Using mostly 4-part m7 and 7th chords in A Dorian and A Aeolian.

Recommended and Alternate Chord Fingerings

Fingerings are not shown. Any fingering would only be a recommended fingering and not mandatory. For many chords there are alternate fingerings, with any particular fingering dependent how the chord is being used in relationship to its previous chord and the next chord.

A Guide to Advanced Chords for Ukulele presents a highly organized and efficient approach to the mysterious subject of advanced chords. Chord dictionaries are not the answer. Even chord theory does not offer any insight into unraveling the complexity of Ukulele chord voicings.

If your goal is to expand your chord vocabulary, A Guide to Advanced Chords for Ukulele is your answer.
