Where are the Chord Diagrams?

With more than one way to play any chord, chord diagrams are not shown with most charts – only the chord name is shown.

For players that already know several voicings for any chord, just play what you already now. For players that don't know a particular chord, there are example chords to play each song available by selecting the "Chords" tab above.

Use these songs to explore a variety of ways to play chords for any particular song.

Moon River

Common Keys: C
First Melodic Interval: P5 ↑ P5

Moon River is a song composed by Johnny Mercer (lyrics) and Henry Mancini (music) in 1961, for whom it won that year's Academy Award for Best Original Song. It was originally sung in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's by Audrey Hepburn, although it has been covered by many other artists. The song also won the 1962 Grammy Award for Record of the Year.

It became the theme song for Andy Williams, who first recorded it in 1961 and performed it at the Academy Awards ceremonies in 1962. He sang the first eight bars at the beginning of his television show and also named his production company and venue in Branson, Missouri after it. Williams' version was vetoed by Cadence Records president Archie Bleyer, who believed it had little or no appeal to teenagers.[citation needed] Andy Williams' version never charted, except as an LP track, which he recorded for Columbia in a hit album of 1962.

The success of the song was responsible for re-launching Mercer's career as a songwriter, which had stalled in the mid-1950s because rock and roll replaced jazz standards as the popular music of the time. An inlet near Savannah, Georgia, Johnny Mercer's hometown, was named Moon River in honor of him and this song. The popularity of the song is such that it has been used as a test sample in a study on people's memories of popular songs.

Recommended and Alternate Chord Fingerings

Fingerings are not shown. Any fingering would only be a recommended fingering and not mandatory. For many chords there are alternate fingerings, with any particular fingering dependent how the chord is being used in relationship to its previous chord and the next chord.

What Are Slash Chords?

G7b9 Slash chords are chord indications where the composer or arranger wants a particular note as the lowest note of a chord voicing.

Slash chord notation is indicated by the chord name, followed by a slash and ANY other single note.

Slash chords typically are part of an ascending or descending bass part of the chord.

On instruments capable of a wider range of notes for selecting their chord voicings, actually complying with those wishes is possible. For the ukulele, it's not always possible. A lot of times those lower bass notes covered by a piano, guitar or bass - if present.

For ukuleles in the common rentrant tuning you can pretty much play the chord, not worrying about the particular voicing.

As a “jazz” standard Moon River uses 4-part contemporary, a.k.a "jazz" chords. Moon River uses a wider range of chords than your typical rock, pop or folk song. You'll definitely need to venture beyond the third fret of your instrument to play this arrangement.

When venturing in solo ukulele and “jazz” chords, a core set of chords and a solid foundation on how chords are constructed is needed to be successful.

How I Learned these “Jazz” Chords... Learning these more advanced chords doesn't take some mythical secret knowledge. All it takes is knowing how chords are created - where they come from. I learned them over many years. Using the information I ultimately put down in my book A Guide to Advanced Chords for Ukulele. Study how to make any chord you will ever need to play using the tried and true chord formulas that the pros use. They're all in this book.
