Satin Doll

Satin Doll - is a jazz standard written by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Written in 1953, the song has been recorded countless times, by such artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, 101 Strings, and Nancy Wilson. Its chord progression is well known for its unusual use of chords and opening with a ii-V-I turnaround.
Johnny Mercer was often asked to write lyrics to already popular songs. The lyrics to "Satin Doll" were written after the song was already a hit in its instrumental version. Ellington used "Satin Doll" as the closing number at most of his concerts.
It is possible that the music was not co-composed by Ellington but solely by pianist-arranger Billy Strayhorn, who worked closely with Ellington.
The popular 1950s group, The Gaylords had a minor hit with their recording of "Satin Doll" in 1958

Performance Notes
All arrangements should be used as a guideline for harmonizing a melody. This is just one way to play a particular song.
As a “jazz” standard Satin Doll uses 4-part contemporary, a.k.a "jazz" chords. Using a wider range of chords than your typical rock, pop or folk song. You'll definitely need to venture beyond the third fret of your instrument to play this arrangement.
When venturing into solo ukulele and “jazz” chords, a core set of chords and a solid foundation on how chords are constructed are needed to be successful in this style of music.

How I Learned these “Jazz” Chords... Learning these more advanced chords doesn't take some mythical secret knowledge. All it takes is knowing how chords are created - where they come from. Core Chords is a series of lessons for building your 4-part chords. These chords commonly called jazz chords, are really just 4-part chords used in a wide range of musical styles.
The Big Six chords include: Seventh 7, Major Seventh maj7, Minor Seventh m7, Half Diminished Seventh or Minor Seven Flat Five diminished 7 (m7b5), Diminished Seventh o7 and Augmented Seventh +7. These six chords form a core set of chords.

Billy Eckstine - Satin Doll
Although Nat King Cole ultimately became the most popular romantic black vocalist of his day, he wasn't the first by his own admission...Billy Eckstine was. While Nat was still performing with his Trio, Billy was heading the first superstar big band comprised mainly of black musicians that included at one time or another: Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Art Blakey, Fats Navarro, and his female vocalist was Sarah Vaughan. "Satin Doll", with music composed by either Duke Ellington and/or Billy Strayhorn (some divided opinion on this) and lyrics by Johnny Mercer, became one of the all-time jazz standards although it wasn't written until 1953. Billy Eckstine's smooth, baritone vocal style fits the song perfectly.
