A satin Bower bird (male) above
TOTALLY random stuff I've collected on the web and doesn't have a place in the jazz guitar, ukulele or main publishing pages on the site.
I remember seeing a this bird on TV years ago. And, it stuck with me.
Just like the Bower bird that collects a variety of objects like shells, leaves, flowers, feathers, stones, berries, and even discarded plastic items. A bower's U-shaped nest, a structure of sticks and leaves can include hundreds of these objects. The bird will spend hours carefully sorting and arranging his collection, with each thing in a specific place.
All of this to attract the female Bower bird. The things we do!!!

Released with much fanfare in January of 1984, the Macintosh was the first affordable computer to include a Graphical User Interface. It was built around the new Motorola 68000 chip, which was significantly faster than previous processors, running at 8 MHz. The Mac came in a small beige case with a black and white monitor built in. It came with a keyboard and mouse, and had a floppy drive that took 400k 3.5" disks--the first personal computer to do so. It originally sold for $2,495.

Politicians like to say that government should be run more like a business. Americans, perhaps thinking of thrifty hometown mom-and-pop small businesses, nod in a collective "Amen."
Unfortunately, the Washington of today took its cue not from a 1950’s community-based small business but rather a 1990’s-style corporate raider.
Like the absentee corporate managers who care only about the bottom line in the next earnings report, our political system looks no further than yesterday’s poll and the next election cycle. Cut back on investments in the future in order to make the short-term ledger/next election look a little better. Put off the big problems for someone down the road to clean up. Slash benefits to the workers while the CEO’s get massive bonuses. Corporations pollute our air with toxic emissions; politicians pollute our airwaves with toxic "wedge issues."
Washington is awash in money. There are 90,000 lobbyists and 60,000 lawyers working the system for the benefit of their clients.
It’s pretty clear why short-term politics beats out the long-term common good.
What shall we do?
Will we continue down the path of cynical and shortsighted policies? A path that plays to our fears and divides our communities? Or, will we begin organizing Americans to think big and use our national imagination to create a roadmap for a better future?"

Darwins complete publications and many of his handwritten manuscripts. The largest collection of Darwin's writings ever assembled
(from the site) CHARLES Robert Darwin (1809-1882) - PERHAPS no one has influenced our knowledge of life on earth as much as Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882). His theory of evolution by natural selection, now the unifying theory of the life sciences, explained how all of the astonishingly diverse kinds of living things are related and how they became exquisitely adapted to their particular environments. His theory reconciled a host of diverse kinds of evidence such as the succession of fossil forms in the geological record, the geographical distribution of species, recapitulative appearances in embryology, homologous structures, vestigial organs and nesting taxonomic relationships. In further works Darwin demonstrated that the difference between humans and other animals is one of degree not kind. In geology, zoology, taxonomy, botany, palaeontology, philosophy, anthropology, psychology, literature and theology Darwin's writings produced profound reactions, many of which are still ongoing. Yet even without his evolutionary works, Darwin's accomplishments would be difficult to match. His brilliantly original work in geology, botany, biogeography, invertebrate zoology, psychology and travel writing would still make him one of the most original and influential workers in the history of science. Darwin's writings are consequently of interest to an unusually wide variety of readers.

It has also been called the Simplified Keyboard or American Simplified Keyboard, but is commonly known as the Dvorak keyboard or Dvorak layout. The Dvorak keyboard layout was not widely adopted prior to the computer age. Currently, all major Operating Systems, such as Apple Mac OS, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux and BSD ship with Dvorak keyboard layout in addition to the standard QWERTY layout.

To discuss sponsorship opportunities, contact the creator of the Flat Stanley Project, Dale Hubert
(from their site) One of the many advantages of being flat is that Flat Stanley can visit his friends by travelling in an envelope. The Flat Stanley Project is a group of teachers who want to provide students with a meaningful reason to write. Students' written work goes to other places by conventional mail and e-mail. Check out the Flat Stanley List of Participants to see where you can send a Flat Stanley or who might be sending a Flat Stanley to you.
Students make paper Flat Stanleys and begin a journal with him for a few days. Then Flat Stanley and the journal are sent to another school where students there treat Flat Stanley as a guest and complete the journal. Flat Stanley and the journal are then returned to the original sender. Students can plot his travels on maps and share the contents of the journal. Often, a Flat Stanley returns with a pin or postcard from his visit. Some teachers prefer to use e-mail only, and this is noted in the List of Participants. Especially creative hosts send the Flat Stanleys back with pictures, souvenirs, stories and reminders of the visit.
The Flat Stanley Project is a penpal activity- but it's far more than that, too. By sending a Flat Stanley it's as if the senders and the recipients have a mutual friend- a little flat guy they can both talk about.

In Punta Arenas, Chile, in November 1998, Karl Bushby set out on one of the most remarkable journeys of modern times. His plan is as simple as it is extraordinary: to walk up the Americas, across the Bering Straits, through Asia, Russia and Europe, back through the Channel Tunnel and returning to Britain in 2009. It is a journey of remarkable endurance -- 20 miles a day, 3,000 miles a year, 36,000 miles in total. By the the time Karl returns, he will have crossed four continents, twenty five countries, a frozen sea, six deserts and seven mountain ranges. But more than that, unlike other similar expeditions, Karl is attempting it single handed: no huge support teams, no large sponsorship deals, this is the inspiring true story of a man facing remarkable odds -- and winning.

(from their site) - The Green Party of the United States is a federation of state Green Parties. Committed to environmentalism, non-violence, social justice and grassroots organizing, Greens are renewing democracy without the support of corporate donors. Greens provide real solutions for real problems. Whether the issue is universal health care, corporate globalization, alternative energy, election reform or decent, living wages for workers, Greens have the courage and independence necessary to take on the powerful corporate interests. The Federal Elections Commission recognizes the Green Party of the United States as the official Green Party National Committee. We are partners with the European Federation of Green Parties and the Federation of Green Parties of the Americas.
The Green Party decision making body is the National Committee, composed of delegates from each accredited state party. State NC representatives and other committee participants are chosen by each state party.
The Green Party of the United States was formed in 2001 as a reincarnation of the older Association of State Green Parties (1996-2001). Our initial goal was to help existing state parties grow and to promote the formation of parties in all 51 states and colonies. Helping state parties is still our primary goal.
As the Green Party National Committee we will devote our attention to establishing a national Green presence in politics and policy debate while continuing to facilitate party growth and action at the state and local level.
Green Party growth has been rapid since our founding in 2001 and Green candidates are winning elections throughout the U.S. In 2004, the Green Party National Convention nominated David Cobb and Pat LaMarche for the Green Presidential ticket.
We are grassroots activists, environmentalists, advocates for social justice, nonviolent resisters and regular citizens who've had enough of corporate-dominated politics.

I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1954. My family lived in a tough part of Honolulu called Kalihi Valley. We weren’t rich, but I never felt poor-because my mother and father made many sacrifices for my sister and me. My mother was a housewife, and my father was, at various times, a fireman, real estate broker, state senator, and government official.
I attended Iolani School where I graduated in 1972. Iolani is not as well known as its rival, Punahou, but I got a fantastic and formative education there. After Iolani, I matriculated to Stanford University where I graduated in 1976. My major was psychology-which was the easiest major I could find.
After Stanford, I attended the law school at UC Davis because, like all Asian American parents, my folks wanted me to be a “doctor, lawyer, or dentist.” I only lasted one week because I couldn’t deal with the law school teachers telling me that I was crap and that they were going to remake me.

(from the Ralph Nader site) - Ralph Nader (born February 27, 1934, in Winsted, Connecticut) is an Arab American attorney, author, lecturer, political activist, and a candidate in the United States presidential election, 2008. Areas of particular concern to Nader are consumer rights, humanitarianism, environmentalism, and democratic government.
Nader has run for President 5 times (in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008). In 1992 he ran as a write-in in both the New Hampshire Republican and Democratic primaries, and other primaries. In 1996 and 2000, he was the nominee of the Green Party; in 2004, he ran as an independent, but was also endorsed by the Reform Party. His campaigns have been controversial, with his role in the 2000 election in particular being subject to much debate. Many Democrats accuse Nader of siphoning Democratic votes in key states that potentially cost Al Gore the Presidency, while Nader himself has said that the Democrats are to blame for their failure to defeat George W. Bush that year. On February 24, 2008, he announced on NBC's Meet The Press that he is campaigning for the presidency in 2008.

(from artist's site)
Best known as star of the highly-acclaimed hit TV series Survivorman (OLN Canada, The Science Channel US, Discovery Channel International), Les Stroud continues to forge new pathways as a prolific, creative force. In 2000 Stroud took a few small cameras out into the wilderness of Northern Ontario, Canada and spent a week surviving alone without food, water, equipment or camera crew. He single-handedly created, produced, wrote, filmed, hosted, edited and composed the theme music for these first two original, one-hour pilots for what would eventually become the Survivorman series. He remains the only producer in the history of television to produce an internationally broadcast series entirely written, videotaped and hosted alone. Survivorman has gone on to become the highest rated show in the history of both OLN Canada and the Science Channel US and is quickly becoming one of the most popular shows on the Discovery Channel US. Survivorman Productions Inc. was listed as one of the 'Global Top 100' on the coveted list for Realscreen magazine. The show was also the number one pick of Wired Magazine's 'Top Ten' list for February 2007, and Stroud made the 2007 'Top 100 People We Love To Watch' list for Entertainment Weekly magazine. He has appeared on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Canada AM, MTV Live, The View, The Hour, as well as Larry King Live, twice. His second appearance on Larry King was a full hour dedicated to Les and his involvement with the 20th Anniversary of Shark Week on Discovery International.
'This is my favorite new TV show ... absolutely amazing' Ellen DeGeneres

(from their site) It might seem there's nothing you can do about global warming. The problem is just too big.
Of course, we all contribute to global warming. We all have a "carbon footprint," the total carbon dioxide emissions we create when we drive or fly or use electricity.
The first step you can take to fight global warming is to reduce your carbon footprint through conservation. Drive less. Turn down the thermostat. Buy locally produced goods. A recent survey of TerraPass customers shows that they're already taking all kinds of steps to reduce their impact.
Then use TerraPass to balance the emissions you can't reduce.
When you buy a TerraPass, your money funds clean energy and efficiency projects such as wind farms. These projects result in verified reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
Of course, global warming is too big a problem for a handful of people to solve on their own. It's a global problem that requires action on a global scale.
But entrepreneurial groups are leading the way. City and state governments, forward-looking businesses, and enthusiastic citizens are banding together to show that a sustainable future is possible today.
Every TerraPass member has taken a simple positive step to fight global warming. Every TerraPass purchase is a vote for innovation, efficiency, and clean energy. Together, we have eliminated over 600 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.
Be part of a group that is driving change today.

Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour
Michael Johnathon
Taping and webcast at: Kentucky Theatre
214 Main St
Lexington, KY
Michael Johnathon is a folksinger, songwriter, concert performer, author ... and now playwright ... who has a worldwide radio audience approaching a million listeners each week. He also created the world’s first multi-camera weekly series broadcast on the Internet.
Dear Fellow Artists,
I created the live audience, multi-media event of WOODSONGS on the belief that grassroots artists, collectively, had an audience bigger than Garth Brooks and Bruce Springsteen. Think of it - thousands of musicians, songwriters, bands and folkies travel the earth searching for their audience, making a living and selling their CD's. The only thing missing was a global stage that would introduce these hard working artists to the huge audience that was obviously supporting all of them. Woodsongs exists on the principal that the audience cares. The audience is interested. And the audience will always respond to good art.
Artists are chosen to appear on our stage are selected because they are good. End of story. Fame, commercial success or lack there-of, who you know, who you opened for, whether you are on a label or are releasing your own CD, what famous artist used the same mixing board you recorded your latest CD on and who manages you means NOTHING.
I say it often on the show and I mean it, "You don't have to be Famous to be on WoodSongs . . . you have to be Good!"
Keep in mind that WoodSongs is NOT a concert. Several hundred people are in our theatre to WATCH a radio show get produced. The show is equally divided between two artists, giving each artist three on-air song performances. Song lengths, to be fair, need to be about 3 1/2 minutes long. WoodSongs is an acoustic performance program mixed with conversation. BILLBOARD MAGAZINE described the show as "A Prairie Home Companion meets Conan O'Brien." If you are not familiar with our show, we encourage you to visit our archives and listen to an on-line broadcast before submitting.
One more thing: We don't pay you anything.
I don't get a penny for this. Our chief engineer Kevin Johnson, the 32 member WoodSongs Crew and the cyber-dude who built this website aren't paid anything either. A local hotel will put you up for free, local restaurants will feed you and our show goes out free-of-charge to radio. You can sell your CDs to the audience after the show and we will even help you do that. Most importantly, however, you will be introducing your music and your art to over 1,100,000 radio listeners on 460+ radio stations in many countries... plus global internet, full online archiving, podcasting and now national television.
The WOODSONGS OLD TIME RADIO HOUR is a global, artist-driven coffeehouse that is reaching out to the HUGE grassroots music audience.
And we are very hopeful you can be part of it!

Bamboo has been used for Erosion Control and Water Treatment, Toys, Floors, Food, Paper, Traditional Chinese Medicine and much more...
Bamboo is the main food of the Giant Panda; it makes up 99% of the Panda's diet.
(from the American Bamboo Society's Web site ) - Bamboo is just grass, but it varies in height from dwarf, one foot (30 cm) plants to giant timber bamboos that can grow to over 100 feet (30 m). It grows in many different climates, from jungles to high on mountainsides. Bamboos are further classified by the types of roots they have. Some, called runners, spread exuberantly, and others are classified as clumpers, which slowly expand from the original planting. There are also varieties of root systems that are a mixture of these types. Generally, the tropical bamboos tend to be clumpers and the temperate bamboos tend to be runners.
