Strums - Rhythmic Syllables - Pairs (UL39_Pairs.shtml) | Updated: 21-Nov-2008 - 15:25
There are 36 possible four beat pairings of the six rhythmic syllables.
It is these pairs that provide variety in strumming patterns.
MIDI - Here is a MIDI file for reference
(melody, harmony & rhythm). This
is not an actual recording of Pairs, but a MIDI file from
the Sibelius notation program
used to create the chart.
Click here to hear the entire example.
Each one of the above 36 pairs has a unique sound.
By tying the end of one syllable to the beginning of the next syllable an additional 36 pairs and sound can be created.

To hear what some these patterns sound like, any of the example MP3 files on my A Guide To Blues Chord Progressions For Ukulele A To Z book page used some of this patterns as well as muting the strings.
