Upper Partials or Chord Extensions are the 9th, 11th and 13ths of a chord. These chords substutites be a direct replacement or expansion of existing chords.
Here is an earlier comping lesson using 9ths. A 9th chord is created by raising the root of any chord two frets, a whole step. When root is the lowest note of a chord you can instead lower the third. For a minor seventh chord lower the third one fret or one half step. For a major seventh chord lower the third two frets or a whole step.
