The Cheesy Guitars site is dedicated to vintage instruments made in Europe and Soviet Union during the "communist" years. The first reason we've made this site is that there's no information about these guitars, no pictures and no reviews. But they exist, and they definitely worth checking out.

Instrumental Guitar Bands and Albums

Music I grew up with as a budding guitarist and fueled my desire to play guitar

The Beatles on the "Ed Sullivan Show," 1964

I can still remember that Sunday night. As a 10 year old it was something I never saw before.

Songs played on the February 9, 1964,  "Ed Sullivan Show":

  • All My Loving
  • Till There Was You
  • She Loves You
  • I Saw Her Standing There
  • I Want to Hold Your Hand

Al Caiola's Tuff Guitar album was one of my favorite albums as a kid back in the late 60's when I first got into guitar. I would love to record my versions of these songs.

(from artist's site) The Surfaris began their forty plus year career by recording Wipe Out, one of the most popular songs recorded in a generation. Wipe Out, Surfer Joe and others captured the sound of the early 1960's. Initially catapulted by the California surf culture, The Surfaris transcended the local scene into international stardom.

Since then, Bob Berryhill continues to play the music and tell the amazing story behind the music of The Surfaris.

(from their site) Danelectro was founded by Nathan Daniel in 1947; throughout the late forties, the company produced amplifiers for Sears, Roebuck and Company and Montgomery Ward. In 1954, Danelectro started producing the Danelectro lines of solidbody electric guitars and amplifiers, and also working as a "jobber", that is producing guitars and amps by contract, that were branded not with the Danelectro name, but with the names of various store brands, such as Silvertone and Airline. Later hollow-bodied guitars (constructed out of Masonite and plywood to save costs and increase production speed,) distinguished by Silvertones' maroon vinyl covering, Danelectros' light tweed covering, the concentric stacked tone/volume knobs used on the two-pickup models of both series, and the "lipstick-tube" pickups of both--invented by cramming the entire mechanism into spare lipstick tubes--these lines aimed to produce no-frills guitars of reasonably good tone at low cost. In 1956, Danelectro introduced the six-string electric bass, which would be adopted by other companies such as Fender with the Fender VI. The six string bass never proved especially popular but found an enduring niche in Nashville as the instrument of choice for "tick-tack" bass lines. In 1966, Danelectro was sold to MCA. A year later, the Coral line was introduced, known for its hollow-bodies and electric sitars. In 1969, the Danelectro plant was closed, due to MCA's attempt to market Danelectros to small guitar shops, rather than large department stores.
