Guitarist and composer Mike Baggetta is quickly becoming known as one of New York CityÕs most original young voices on his instrument.Ê Often sought out for his sensitive and focused approach, he blends subtly powerful phrasing with the kind of musicality only honest listening can produce.Ê Foremost, he does not allow his mastery of the guitar to overshadow his musical choices.
The projects that Mike leads are a quartet featuring his own compositions with saxophonist Bill McHenry, Eivind Opsvik on bass and RJ Miller on drums; a trio exploring the jazz repertoire through his own perspective on standards featuring many of the finest bassists and drummers throughout the world; and TIN/BAG a collaborative effort with trumpeter Kris Tiner that strives to realize a new and personal approach to duo playing through improvisation, composition and re-interpretation.
In demand as much as a sideman as he is with the projects he leads, Mike has had the pleasure of performing with jazz veterans Tom Harrell, Conrad Herwig, Joe Fonda, Bucky Pizzarelli, Ralph Bowen and Tony Reedus.Ê Baggetta is also a favorite guitarist amongst his own generation of NYC musicians, having performed with Pete Robbins, Tyshawn Sorey, Sunny Kim, Jeremy Udden and Darcy James ArgueÕs Secret Society.Ê He has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean.Ê Mike received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.Ê While enrolled in the Jazz Studies curriculum, he was fortunate to study with Ted Dunbar, Stanley Cowell, Vic Juris, Kenny Barron, Ralph Bowen and Dr. Lewis Porter, also citing masterclasses with Jim Hall as being particularly insightful.

Guitarist Sheryl Bailey is rated among the foremost bopbased guitarists to have emerged in the 1990’s. Her attack can be direct and hard swinging, but she also exudes subtlety, elegance of phrase and a pure, warm, liquid sound. Bill Milkowski has written about her: “ a modernist burner with an abundance of Pat Martino-style chops, Bailey prefers angular lines, odd harmonies and the occasional touch of dissonance as she sails up and down the fretboard with fluid abandon.” – JazzTimes Magazine, Februrary 2005
Her musical activities aren’t confined to groups working strictly in the orthodox, bop based jazz tradition, as she has toured and recorded with bassist, Richard Bona and is a member of David Krakauer’s Klezmer Madness. Other artists are tenor saxophonist, Gary Thomas, Urban Folk and Jazz artist, KJ Denhert, and pop diva, Irene Cara. While her mid 1990’s CD Little Misunderstood sees her playing with total familiarity and command of the fusion idiom, her latest releases, Reunion of Souls, The Power of Three, and Bull’s Eye represent her love of contemporary straight-ahead jazz.
In 1995 Sheryl was awarded third place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Guitar Competition, and has toured South America on behalf of the US State Department as a Jazz Ambassador, honoring the music of Duke Ellington. She currently leads her own trio, The Sheryl Bailey Three (Gary Versace on Hammond B3 and Ian Froman on drums). Her 2002 release, The Power of Three was critically acclaimed and charted in the top 20 of the Jazz Week radio charts. The trio conjures the essence of the Grant Green/ Larry Young/ Elvin Jones band of the late 60’s.
She is also in demand as an educator. Sheryl has been an Assistant Professor of Guitar at the esteemed Berklee College of Music since 2000, and has been a popular clinician at the National Guitar Summer workshop, The Stanford Jazz Workshop, The Duquesne Jazz Guitar Seminar, Uarts in Philadelphia, and at Southern Cross University in Lismore, Australia.
Sheryl’s latest release is titled, Bull’s Eye. The CD features nine new compositions and tightly woven improvisations from the trio. A track from the disc, “ Old and Young Blues” will be featured in the Master Anthology of Jazz solos, vol. IV by Mel Bay in January 2005. She is also working on a book for Mel Bay about modern approaches to jazz improvisation. She keeps a hectic itinerary touring, teaching, and recording.
Mickey (McHouston) "Guitar" Baker (born October 15, 1925 in Louisville, Kentucky) is an American guitarist. He was half of the pop duo Mickey & Sylvia, who had a hit with "Love Is Strange" in 1957. He is listed in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Mickey Baker is also noteworthy as a session guitarist and guitar educator. Baker's session work spanned jazz, calypso, mambo, and rhythm and blues. He is widely held to be a critical force in the bridging of rhythm and blues (R&B) and rock and roll, along with Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry. His self-tuition method book series, the "Complete Course in Jazz Guitar" is a mainstay for introducing motivated students of guitar to the world of jazz. With Les Paul, Mickey Baker is important as an early exponent of solid body electric guitars for jazz and popular music.

( from WidipediA ) George Barnes started his career accompanying blues vocalists such as Big Bill Broonzy. In the mid-1930s, Barnes toured throughout the Midwest. By 1938, he was working as a musician on the staff of NBC studios. After a stint in the Army, Barnes recorded with his octet and worked as a studio musician for Decca. He did not receive national acclaim until he recorded an album called "Two Guitars" with Carl Kress. After the death of Kress, Barnes recorded several albums with Bucky Pizzarelli. Their partnership lasted through the early 1970s. Before his death, Barnes also made well-received albums with Joe Venuti. He also contributed an album entitled "Guitars a'plenty", under the name The George Barnes Guitar Choir, for Mercury Records in 1962. It was part of a series of recordings known as "Super Stereo Sound" as technical "state of the art" techniques.
Play the Guitar: The Easy Way to Learn All the Chords and Rhythms, by George Barnes & Bob Mersey For Guitar. Includes a high-quality printed music book and a narrated compact disc featuring every exercise and composition in the method book. Published by Music Minus One. (MMOCD3609) |
( from WidipediA ) Barnes formative guitar years preceded the be-bop era therefore his playing style was more swing. His lines were usually short, very melodic, bluesy and "inside" (e.g. diatonic) as compared to the chromaticism and long lines of be-bop era guitarists (like Pat Martino). His improvisation employed "call and answer" extensively --e.g. playing a line in one octave (call) and repeating the exact or similar line in another octave (answer). His lines swung, were well articulated and often cleverly posed. Barnes' tone was brighter than most jazz guitarists (like Joe Pass or Jim Hall) and reflected his "happy" approach.

(from artist's site) - Guitarist Jeff Barone has been a part of the New York City jazz scene for over a decade. Jeff also went on to perform with artists such as Tom Harrell, Bob Mintzer, Warren Chaisson, and Jimmy Lovelace. From the liner notes of his debut CD, “Crazy Talk”, Jack Wilkins states: “Jeff’s playing is technically masterful with a sound that comes right from the heart and improvisations that are unique and emotionally satisfying.” Reuben Wilson says, “Jeff is one of New York’s best kept secrets.”

(from artist's site) - Jazz guitarist Gerry Beaudoin has carved out a career as a leader, arranger and guitarist. Called, “One of New England’s premier jazz guitarists“ by Just Jazz Guitar Magazine, Gerry has appeared on over twenty recordings in his career since his first national release in 1990. His award winning group the Boston Jazz Ensemble which featured percussion legend Alan Dawson on drums and vibes, alto saxophonist Fred Lipsius from the seminal jazz-rock group Blood Sweat and Tears, and Dick Johnson who leads the Artie Shaw Band on clarinet, received rave reviews and critical acclaim.
In 1992 Gerry teamed with mandolin titan David Grisman for the all acoustic recording Minor Swing which became an acoustic music cult favorite and paved the way for Gerry’s 1998 recording, Just Among Friends. This recording featured Gerry and David again in an acoustic setting with jazz guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli. Just Among Friends received wonderful reviews and was “submitted for consideration for a Grammy Nomination.â€
A chance meetingin 1994 with rock guitar legend J. Geils from the J. Geils Band was an event that Gerry remembers fondly. In his own words, “I was playing a set at the Boston Guitar Show and after I finished a gentleman came up to me and said, 'Hi, I’m J. Geils and I have some of your records.' After I got over the shock of who he was we chatted for a while and I found out he had always been into jazz and blues since he was a kid in New Jersey. A few weeks later a promoter put us together for a show that was mobbed with lines outside in the pouring rain. I was truly amazed that a superstar rocker could play jazz standards and had such depth to his playing.†After that first gig J became a frequent guest with the Gerry Beaudoin Trio in concerts across the country. In 1997 Jay came by to sit in on a gig with Gerry and his longtime friend Duke Robillard and the three guitarists decided it was so much fun they should do it more often. Since that night they have been performing together as the New Guitar Summit in concerts and festivals. Their first recording in 2000, Retrospective, was released to rave reviews and a second recording by The New Guitar Summit will be out in 2003. They have appeared on the PBS TV show CD Highway and have a DVD of that concert coming out in 2003. Gerry is also a featured performer on the MEL BAY PRODUCTIONS video Café Benedetto.

(from artist's site) - Paul Bollenback's emotionally expressive style and eclectic approach is the result of a wide range of influences, including Carlos Santana, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Kenny Burrell, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, John McLaughlin, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter and Lenny Breau. Born in Hinsdale, Illinois, Bollenback was raised in Hastings on Hudson, New York, a suburb of New York City. At the age of seven, he received a nylon-string guitar from his father, a scientist, classically trained trumpeter and lover of music. At the age of eleven, his family relocated from New York to New Delhi, India. It was there that he cultivated his life-long interest in exotic musical sounds and timbres, which is evident in even his most jazz-based work. When his family returned to New York, Paul's father bought him an electric guitar and he started to gig in rock and roll bands around the area. Then he heard Miles Davis and his world changed forever.

(from artist's site) - Born in New Jersey, Gary Bruno began studying guitar at age seven. He showed an interest in music at the age of five with Drums leading the way. Soon after, the drums were put aside to make way for guitar. Taking weekly lessons Gary almost immediately showed prodigious technique and a hunger for learning music.
Gary attributes this early desire to his Mom & Dad providing him with a radio which seemed to go everywhere with him as early as age three. He went to sleep with music on and awoke much the same. After a short period of guitar lessons Gary began to learn the songs of the day from the radio. While he was taught to read music the immediate need for it took a backseat to learning pop music from his trusty radio.By age thirteen Gary had his first professional job with his band. Hired by a family friend to play a Christmas Party, that job was the first of what would become a livelihood for the better part of the next twenty-five plus years.

(from artist's site) - A graduate of William Paterson University's elite jazz program, Jeffrey Burr has garnered critical acclaim for his unique approach to playing jazz guitar. The son of two classical bassists, Jeffrey began his musical education at an early age, and was quickly recognized as a prodigy. By the time he reached college, he had already played with many of the established Bay Area players such as Mark Levine, Harvey Wainapel, Vince Wallace, etc. As a member of the California High School All-Stars, he toured Japan and performed twice with bop grandmaster Dizzy Gillespie at the Monterey Jazz Festival.
At WPU he went straight into the top ensemble, winning Best College Small Group in Downbeat Magazine's annual jazz competition. In 1997 Rufus Reid, legendary bassist and director of the jazz program at WPU, invited Blue Note Records president Bruce Lundvall to Jeffrey's final recital. Lundvall soon had Jeffrey in the recording studio with Reid, drummer Adam Nussbaum and producer Bob Belden. By this time Jeffrey had moved to New York and started performing in the city's famous jazz haunts, including the Blue Note, 55 Bar, and Smalls, rubbing shoulders with many of the city's elite performers, including an unknown young singer named Norah Jones.
Jeffrey now resides in Oakland, CA with his wife and son. As well as gigging and teaching around the greater Bay Area, Jeffrey is also a Senior Music Analyst for Pandora.com's Music Genome Project. His latest recording, featuring mostly his own compositions, is entitled "Bright Blue."
