Classical Guitar Information

A collection of links and information classical guitars and related info for the jazz guitarist

gtr_classical.pngClassical Guitar - A classical guitar, also called a Spanish guitar, is a musical instrument from the family of musical instruments called chordophones. This instrument is most commonly used by classical guitarists playing classical music, but is also used for folk music.

The history of the classical guitar and its repertoire span over four centuries, including its ancestor the baroque guitar. The popularity of the classical guitar has been sustained over the years by many great players, arrangers, and composers. A very short list might include Gaspar Sanz (1640-1710), Fernando Sor (1778-1839), Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829), Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909), Andrés Segovia (1893-1987), Julian Bream (1933), and John Williams (1941).

By using the fingers to pluck instead of a plectrum or bow, the performer can play polyphonic music. It is common to encounter classical guitar music that sustains two, three, or four musical lines or voices.

You can not have a web site with a classical guitar page and not have mention of the Andrés Segovia. Segovia IS responsible for the recondition that the classical guitar has today.

SegoviaA.png Andrés Torres Segovia, marqués de Salobreña (February 21, 1893 – June 3, 1987) was a Spanish classical guitarist, and later nobleman, born in Linares, Spain who is considered to be the father of the modern classical guitar movement by most modern music scholars. Segovia claimed that he "rescued the guitar from the hands of flamenco gypsies," and built up a classical repertoire to give it a place in concert halls. In recognition of his contributions to music and the arts, Segovia was ennobled June 24th, 1981 by the King of Spain (S.M. el rey Juan Carlos) who elevated Segovia into the first hereditary marquess of Salobreña, (formally styled, "El señor don Andrés Torres Segovia, marqués de Salobreña", i.e. the Most Illus. Lord The Marquess of Salobreña.) with the following coat of arms: "en campo de azur sobre ondas de azur y plata, unas rocas de su color, sumadas de una torre donjonada de oro, aclarada de azur."

Andrés Segovia (1893-1987) is considered to be the father of the modern classical guitar movement by most modern scholars.

Without Segovia's efforts, the classical guitar would not be where it is today.

(from classicalguitar.net) - Segovia had many students throughout his career. Among the more famous are Christopher Parkening, John Williams, Elliot Fisk and Oscar Ghiglia. These students, along with the many others, carry on Segovia's tradition, while at the same time expanding the classical guitar's presence, repertoire, and musical boundaries.

  • How to Record Classical Guitar by Ben Tobiasson - ( link )

(Ed.) The only problem I had with the article is the reccommendation to get a PC. Here is what Ben said.

"I needed a computer to do everything: word processing, the internet, etc. so I bought a PC." Nothing could be further from the truth. A Mac can a nd does all that and is easy to use. A Mac does not suffer from many of the problems that owning a PC comes with. virus, hard to learn and just not FUN.

Nails or No Nails

The use of the nails of the right hand has been debated over the years starting in the early 19th century with Fernando Sor who found the use of nails to be unnecessary with as his contemporary Dionisio Aguado felt that the nails were necessary to achieve speed and tonal variation. From Andres Segovia onwards the nail in conjunction with the flesh of the right hand fingers has become the accepted practice.

(source: FleaMarketMusic.com) Any classical guitar strings will work. You'd only use the D G B and E strings. As far as I know there aren't any unwound classical D strings.

  • Use the classical guitar D for the uke G.
  • Use the classical G for the uke C.
  • Use the classical B for the uke E.
  • Use the classical E for the uke A.

(Ed.) Any gauge string would work depending on how much tension you like on your strings. A favorite brand is Savarez. I've use the Savarez Alliance strings (red package) in the past. Mike Atkins at Alternate Tunings makes these string sets up for ukulele players.
